Bob Blosl's Heritage Large Fowl Thread

I have Light Brahmas and absolutely love them as a heritage breed. They are so friendly and wonderful. So far all the eggs I have hatched out this season have been amazing. I am starting out with Dorkings (Silver Gray) this year and can't wait to see how well they do.

I have read that they were originally a dual purpose breed that is now a ornamental. Is it possible to bring them back to that since the gene pool is so limited. I have only found mainly hatchery stock.

looks like this thread is stuck in neutral so I will try to shove it down the hill and re start it. Does anyone raise Brahmas? I have had the best year with Buff Brahamas, then white rocks then white Leghorns and last Rhode Island Reds. Should produce some good reds later but that is how my year is going. For the past two years the Brahmas where last.

Any one have blue chickens? That's my wife's favorite color of chickens. When are you going to make a blue red she says.

What color do you think is the hardest to breed for a beginner? what color do most beginners want to start with because the picture they see is so pretty?

blue

Bob, I wanted to raise Silver Laced Wyandottes!! I thought, and still do, that they were the most beautiful chickens I had ever seen. I got some hatchery SLW but they didn't look like the ones I had seen online so I researched. Finally, I did acquire at trio (culls from his show stock) from a WBA breeder in Wisconsin but was daunted by everything I read about double mating and the difficulty of keeping the lacing.. As a beginner, I thought I shouldn't even try the laced birds. I rehomed my rooster with a neighbor for his laying flock and still have one of the original hens, and two other hens that I got the following year from the same breeder, that I love dearly. Everyone that sees them asks what they are and comments on how beautiful they are. Here is a picture of the original hen raising a brood of Icelandic chicks last spring.....

The Columbian or Partridge color patterns i would say would be 2 of the most difficult color patters to try and breed. Columbians are not a color that I would ever recommend to a beginner or even maybe an experienced breeder unless they are prepared for hatching numbers and fierce culling. Nothing more stunning than a well typed, colored, and conditioned Columbian colored bird in a show hall IMO.

I've been following this thread for awhile now and the wife has decide she wants some RIR's. So does anyone know of any heritage birds in Southern Illinois?
