Hi guys

I'm getting some new quail tomorrow a trio, 1 bob white male 1 bob white female and 1 tenessee red. Will the bob white male mate with the tenessee red? Also genetically are they safe to?

I'm new to bobs n what not. Is the difference like in coturnix quail? Are they the same breed just a colour difference or is there a more significant differance?

Thank you :)

Tenn Reds are a color mutation of the common Bob White, so no problem interbreeding them. You won't get pure Tenn Reds, and should not represent them as such.

You need to do a lot of research on bobwhites. Coturnix are japanese quail. Bobwhites are new world quail, which are native to most of the midwest and eastern portions of North America, as well as some areas of mexico. They are nothing like coturnix. They can be very aggressive and always are flighty/nervous in your presence. They breed best in pairs or trios. They will only lay appx 100 eggs a year beginning the first may after they have reached 6 months of age. If they are not laying right now they will not lay until next year at this time.

You should read these articles about raising bobwhites. As well as the UC davis guide to raising gamebirds in my signature. They contain some of the same information but they all have good stuff regarding raising bobs.

Also tennessee reds don't color sex they have to vent sexed so be sure you are correct about their sex before adding them all together.

Its really easy to tell when you are making mistakes with bobwhites, since they'll kill each other if you mess up.
