I am new to hatching bobwhite quail eggs. I thought this whole hatch was going to be a dud because they took 4 days to arrive in mail and it was freezing out in Alaska. I’m seeing development at 4 days of incubation in almost all 43 eggs after setting for 24hrs. I’m curious if I should be seeing a more defined air cell for each egg or if it’s too early? I think I see it on a few, but others are questionable. Any suggestions or opinions? I haven’t touched them until today (because I figured they were all unviable) and won’t touch them again until probably day 21 before lockdown, unless suggested otherwise. (24 days total to hatch). Open to all and any suggestions 🙂 thank you!

they’re at 55% humidity and 100.0F.

All of your eggs are showing good development, great for only day 4! I think you are on track for a good hatch. Yes lock down at day 21, Bobs like a higher humidity than other birds, 60 to 65% at lockdown is good.

Good luck and keep us posted! :jumpy

I’m afraid I’ve never incubated bobwhite but only Cortunix.
You have some fabulous veining there that looks good so I would think the air cell will develop as incubation progresses and weight is lost from eggs. @TwoCrows maybe able to help as I believe she may have incubated this breed.

Also a good article here ~ https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/hatching-quail-eggs-and-brooding-quail-chicks.67362/

Thank you so much! I really appreciate it! I was so pleasantly surprised to see so much development in these guys. I will check the linked article out. :)

Thank you! I couldn’t believe how nice some of the development looked already. I went in expecting 0, and as of now have 40/43 shipped eggs still developing well on day 5. I candled the remaining eggs today!

I definitely have some loose-ish air cells in a few, but don’t seem totally detached. I also have more than a few saddled air cells too. So we will see how it goes! I’ll keep this updated. :) thanks again!

Thanks! I hope so!!! Here are some of the concerning air cells, I think. A few look pretty saddled. Should I continue to try to hatch? I added the last photo to show how much they’ve still developed regardless of air cells being wonky.

Thanks for everyone’s help! @TwoCrows @Yorkshire Coop
