Try and find a single vet, not a big office. If you have a group there are more practice management policies in place, and less people who can decide to allow payments.
They do not take payments. They have a "Care Credit" program that lets you fianance your animal's bill. We were not approved, our credit is shot right now.
We had him to the vet this AM. They want to do ANOTHER surgery, and the estimate was over $400, we've all ready spent over $400.
The next nearest vet is about 35 miles one way, and it's the gentleman who is a member of our church. He won't take payments, and he knows us. Must be a lot of deadbeats around these parts.
We're just barely getting back on our feet from my son's surgery. Most of our bills were paid by the generosity of people in our church and community. Payday is this Friday and we have exactly $27.93 in the checking account and about $40 on hand.
I know this upsets a lot of people, but my kids come first. My boy has an appointment in Pittsburgh tomorrow, which will take the remainder of our cash on hand. The car is on 1/4 tank and will have to be filled before we head down to the hospital. There simply is no more money.
We will have to treat this at home and hope for the best.
Thanks for all the input.

There is a rescue about 40 miles away, but I don't know what their policy is. I'll have to make a few phone calls this afternoon when my boy goes down for his nap.
I recently had one of my animals rip another one's shoulder open ...clean laceration all the way ....and I rinsed thoroughly with pure saline and then flushed it with betadine ...and super glued the edges together. I started her on a course of Baytril and cleaned the wound site with saline, daily.
No infection and perfectly healed within a week! She just has a little bald spot over the scar ...probably will be completely unnoticed once the hair grows back in.
If you can get that infection out ..and the antibiotics are helping keep it out of the dog's system (you'll know this when the infection stops increasing everyday) ...you can saline flush and betadine flush and then super glue the edges. It holds up better than flimsy stitches ..especially on a foot ...and it goes away on its own, in little time ..leaving a closed and healed wound site.
Beware.. the initial application of the glue stings a little (on fresh exposed skin) and the animal will react ...just be prepared. Within seconds, it is completely dry and seems to not be as aggravating or stingy ..and the animal should settle down.
And yes, I realize this method sounds very unorthodox ..but I have seen it used many times ....and I have used it with great success.
I just got a phone call from one of the vets from our office. They have 5. She had heard the exchange this morning and called to see what was going on.
You have to understand, I'm in there at least once a month getting wormer for our outside cats, flea medicine, Heartguard, fecals on the dog, chicens, cats, etc., they know me, they just have a couple docs who are - well - jerks.
She has agreed to treat Chico for free, and just charge us for medications. She also said if we don't have money now for additional medications, she'd hold a check up to 90 days.
So, she wants me to not feed him after 6 PM tonight and have him in at 9 AM to have them figure out a plan of treatment.
So, I'll just do a wash out with epsom salt, rebandage, and see what to do in the morning at the vet.
I do understand the no money thing...and thinking of the children first but you also have to think of your pets if your a pet owner...it's a responsibility we all have when we make that decision to own pets. It's great to see that your going to make some calls on the rescue group just in case it's gets out of control. Great to have another plan to fall back on. Knowing how much we paid for our brindle boxer I know you prob have ALOT into him already just with the cost of the dog alone, and I pray that it gets better and seeing this picture makes me feel terrible for him. It's got to be painful
It just sucks that these vets aren't willing to work with you on this for the sake of the dog. You can give him a regular aspirin a day to help with his pain. Please keep us informed as to how he's doing. And i'm sending prayers you way! Good luck!
