Boy? Do girls ever hold their tails like this?

I had a roo with very similar coloring. His splotches of red back feathers started coming in around 8-9 weeks, I think?

HOWEVER... Out of my two EEers, it was the on who turned out to be female that had the higher tail (she's the lighter one):

Usually young roo's have little to no tails at that young age. I bet my money you have a pullet who likes to fan her tail out and keep it high.

I have 12 EEs and about half of them kept their tails up like that at that age. They are supposed to be sexed pullets and I got the first ones at the feed store. Several had the same coloring as yours. There were a few I was suspicious of for a while but I am pretty certain they are all girls now at 15 weeks and some still hold their tails up. None of them challenge my 11 week old silkie roo, he's top bird even at half their size.

OK feeling a little more hopeful

My husband thinks I'm nuts for thinking about this so much, considering that in reality I have no say in the mater. But I can't help it, I want to keep her so bad!!! She is so sweet and cuddly. I've already lost one to roohood.

Thanks for sharing all your adorable baby pictures

EEs are derived from a variety of breeds. It wouldn't be so crazy that some of them would display traits typical of Mediterranean breeds -- like holding their tail high. I don't think that leg thickness is all that meaningful in these birds for the same reason. Throw a heavy breed in the mix and you might get heavy breed legs. JMHO.

Actually, all of my chickens are heavy breed chickens and none of them had the thick legs that my EE roo had. However, my SS & BR roo's legs weren't noticably thick at a young age. hmmm....My EE roo was the lead roo though, maybe that made a difference? I am new to this!! : )
