Brabanters and Spitzhaubens--The Differences PIC HEAVY!

I'm betting this is just the place for my question

Anyone here have any silver spangled Appenzeller Spitzhauben eggs, or may have some avaliable in the future?? I am in no big hurry to get eggs (just set some turkey eggs) but these birds are much more difficult to find - especially those of quality. Found a few somewhere on Google, and I am glad I did not inquire past pictures because upon looking at the person's flock it was apparent their birds had WAY too much Polish in them.

I'm up in NE Oregon where winter runs from October through April, lol. These birds would be perfect for the flock, and have PLENTY of room to range, plus a coop with perches at 2-15' feet high.

Also, in the case I do go about looking to hatchery birds: which are okay?? For many breeders (i.e. RIR, Cubalaya, Chantecler, Cochin, etc) I know Ideal is the place to go. I know Ideal has some Appenzeller, but are they worth it?? How about My Pet Chicken??

Thanks

Ideal Hatchery have some nice ones, I've ordered two different batches in two years in a row. Two or three pullets out of 25 chicks would come out pretty good or borderline acceptable to the Spitz standard of UK. You would have to cull hard.

Yes alot of them have alot of Polish features, you do not want them in that category. Their crests are their trademark of a Spitzhauben, not a Polish of silver laced variety being crossed (which it was the case to produce Spitzhaubens in large quantity).

I never ordered from My Pet Chicken however, I know Gabbard has some Spitzhaubens and she supplies Spitzhauben eggs and chicks for MyPetChicken. IMO, not a good idea but that's another time, another day.

I don't know about MPC, but I got an exceptional Sptiz from Ideal. If you look through this tread for my picture posts, all the pictures of the spitiz girl is from Ideal.

She also has an GREAT temperament - can't stand me not paying attention to her, follows me around, and jumps up to see me every time I'm in the coop. I would be DEVASTATED if that bird ever dies. Also, my bird tolerates closed confinement just fine - no aggressive symptoms what so ever.

But Ewe is right - when you get birds from a hatchery you have to cull/rehome them like no tomorrow.

Hi! I have a Sp-Ap hen and 6 one week olds from Meyer's in the brooder. Never thought to ask adubsrsoit's question about a hatchery. Wish I had, sooo...

I'm really excited about these chicks... I hope some will be good... with a couple of roosters. They sure are cute and very personable. This is the lady hen.

I'm in Seattle. I will have some next year. Mine are just chicks now. You can sometimes find them on the BYC auctions. Check the archives, and contact the sellers.

I'm wondering if this is a male. It's the only one with the little pink comb showing, and the only one feathering out like this.

The others all look pretty much like this.

Thanks, Ewesheep. Unfortunately the rooster was killed last winter. She is somewhat Mohawkish. Does she look better in this picture?

I'm really hoping for a nice little rooster (or two) and a few good hens from this bunch (had to show off the babies)!
