Don't mix Spitz hatching eggs with other breeds' eggs because of LLV. I am also careful not to give raw Spitz eggs to any other breeds.

In that case, I've done it LOL! However none of my birds had LLV so far or any signs of it. I'm not too terribly worried about it because if I had Spitz, then LLV may be in the flock as carriers. Had some Spitz eggs that I had an egg eater, and some of them consumed it. No illnesses. Now I dont have any Spitz now but my birds would be carriers? Maybe and maybe not.

Thanks for the reminder!

I plan on breeding two different lines involving my Golds and Silvers.....I will have my golds tested as well as the silvers, I also plan on breeding them together in case the silvers should test positive(and Golds are neg.) as to get Silvers negative of LLV......................................chrisf

I wasn't aware that Spitz had /carried LLV! I knew Brabanters did. I know really nothing about it and had better do research, huh? I also didn't realize it can pass between eggs. I assumed it was genetic. Thanks for the heads up.

Flitter, the way I see about Spitzhaubens with LLV, its genetic and nothing we can do about it. Europe has those too so no matter which way you look at it, its a hit or miss.

Chris, if you can find out if your flock is LLV positive or negative, I would not hesitate getting some hatching eggs from you.

Complicated, but I've done research on how to become negative(if your flock is positive) and that involves breeding rubrics........I'm not a big believer that all Spitz have LLV yet......most common barnyard flocks of all breeds carry it, it is not some mysterious virus, it has been around for decades......if my silvers should test pos., and my golds test neg., there is a way to get silvers to test negative again by a certain breeding schedule by crossing the two color lines and breeding back to color type...........time will tell.........................chrisf

I honestly don't know for sure. I dont have any information to really back it up and if LLV has been around for decades, nothing has been done, it would be a challenge to try to "negativized" the gene. Like people, some are carriers and others don't know it.

If they can survive LLV and live a long time, then either they are carriers OR got lucked out being negative.

Oh no, there are plenty of flocks that are carriers that neither know about it, nor care...it has been around for MANY decades and most commercial food grade flock raisers and eggs producers are now making a very concerted effort to become flock negative........there is a breeding schedule that explains how to become a negative flock again..................................................chrisf

So... if you are serious about doing conscientious breeding... and you have Spitz on the premises... the whole flock should be tested? Any bird that is positive... isolate or cull from all negative birds? If your Spitz tests positive there are breeding practices that may allow you to develop negative LLV birds. Is that correct (and probably oversimplified)?
