Where did the original copy of the blue come from?

On these birds, I traded some silver laced pullets for the white pullets in the last photo with some friends of mine. They were working on the blue lights(columbian) at the time, and did not want to keep the splashes. I suspect it originally came into play via some Cochin blood.

On my blue laced reds, which I had started earlier. I breed a Wyandotte into my gold laced pen.

Did you find any crossover of non-brahma qualities from using the Wyandotte? I was thinking that since they have a rose comb, you would get some offspring with an undesirable comb? I was thinking about using a Wyandotte in my program, but was a little worried about what might happen with the comb.

I would say there are always negative effects from every outcross to another breed. Often requiring several generations to breed out.

With the Wyandotte it was comb, leg feathering, size, type, and temperament.

I should amend that first statement to add in situations like this, there will be a loss of type as a result of outcrossing. There can be advantages in hybrid vigor due to added genetic diversity, but that comes at a cost in cases like this.

Thanks, that is really helpful. You are so right, outcrossing seems to bring is something undesireable, but sometimes you have to do it to get what you are looking for.

Made it home today after 32 days on the road. They've all gotten so big!!! Lost two cockerels to a hawk or something while I was gone, no great loss but that only leaves me with 3 partridge cockerels and two dark cockerels (one of those has vulture hocks) to choose from for breeding. Not a great selection, but I think I can make do with them. I'll post some pictures of them all when I get a minute to breathe....emptying out the RV takes more work than filling it up!

@big medicine How many generations does it generally take for you to get rid of the undesired characteristics from the cross breeding and how do you not lose what you were trying to gain in the process?

My 22 week old buff brahma hen layed an egg at noon today! She was in and out of the coop up and down off the nest box then the roost, all the while talking. Went outside and picked up leaves one at a time tossing them over each shoulder, went back in and got in the nest box and "tah dah" an egg, I am such a proud grandma!

Hi all,
I have a couple questions about my 18 week Light Brahma. At 6 weeks people thought cockerel but now more are saying pullet.

I have so many white feathers everywhere I am sure s/he molted but doesn't look like a cockerel except for the comb and wattles.
Here is the tail:

How close to SOP is s/he? She has yellow legs, no vulture hocks, has a decent size head and not much extra black. Not sure about her tail, tho. Here is a top down view:

If she is a pullet, I will have to work on making a better roost for her as she doesn't fit anymore.

Any idea how much room on either side of the 6" roost board? Would a wider roost board be better - her feet hang over even that.
At 18 weeks is her frame done growing and now she will just put on weight?
Thank you for all advice. I understand that as a hatchery bird she probably isn't SOP, but I do want to know.
