I have Light Brahmas and my pullet just laid her very first egg yesterday!

She was 2 days short of 26 weeks old and it seems like I've been waiting for ages too. She had been getting quite noisy the 2-3 days prior to laying and on the actual day was making sure everyone knew that she was about to lay an egg. I only have 3 chickens, and Matilda is the only hen. The two boys were so funny, when she went back inside the coop to lay they followed her and kept watch over her like expectant fathers-in-waiting LOL, sitting beside her. It was so very cute! She had very obligingly gone straight into the nest box I'd set up for her that same day and moved hay around making it comfortable. She'd been noisy all day long and finally laid her egg around 4pm. Afterwards she came out to join the boys and they all went free-ranging. Now we have our first egg I'm impatient for her to go broody and hatch me some babies!! Ha ha.

I hatched out five of them this year while experimenting with colours and they are the nicest birds I ever saw. All sold in a few days once word got out though. I will be hatching mnore by the end of the laying season for early spring breeding. I have a gold partridge roos ter in with grey girls. I get a mix of blue, black and blue partridge from them. No blue partridge girls though (what I was hoping for) but I have now bought in a blue male to cross over my one gold patridge hen so fingers crossed for their breeding next year. Anyway, the blacks are the MOST AMAZING. They shimmer with a greeny/purple sheen in the sun. They have the sleekest feathers on their backs and a whole puffy pad of soft black feathers around their rump. Plus, the feathers on the feet seem to be a bit more hard wearing. I havea lot of trouble here keeping feathered feet in good condition, it's really wet and soggy here for at least 4 months a year.

Ha ha, I wish I could, they are all sold. Should be hatching more soon, so pics of those when they are feathered out, probably October or so. See below what I have left this year, all still juveniles though. Only just took these pics and the sun is going down, so they look a little dull. Will get some more on a sunny day.
