Brahma Thread

i purchased recently three buff hens and a rooster. i have noticed that they are very quiet, dont stray very far and are gentle i really like them but i noticed that they have thick but soft feathering. will they be okay in the florida heat in summer?

I live just north of Tampa, Florida. Our coops have lots of ventilation and I make sure there is always plenty of water. I do free range them for a few hours a day and they hang out under the trees. I have not had any problems with my Brahmas due to heat. They are such great chickens!

I know that you all are more than likely right about him being a roo. Any other opinions? lol

I thought I would revive this thread no pictures yet but I am getting a trio of buff brahma bantams in the next couple weeks !

This topic makes me want to work with brahmas again. Way back when I started with one brahma hen and ordered some chicks, only 1 survived and it was a hen. I crossed them with a partridge rock rooster and kept the pullets from that but gave them to a friend who crossed them with a dark cornish x cochin cross. The offspring from that were awesome. I am still waiting to see barred, a crisp barred brahma would stop anyone dead in their tracks and I know it is possible to do if someone set their mind to it. Dark red would be nice too, maybe cross a buckeye to a buff brahma and go from there. My favorite would be dun, then dunlaced, dun pencilled, dun partridge, dun barred, dun crele, and so on, I can only dream for now.

Someday I will work with brahmas, some day.
