You can check their droppings for worms, if roundworms, they look like thin noodles. Tapeworms look like small bubbles on the droppings. For lice, check the bird's vent for small amber color bugs, and cluster of white eggs at the base of the feathers below the vent. Hope that helps.
I'm just taking a chance that this is the best place to post this. It's not an emergency, injury or illness. But my Light Brahma hen Nancy, four years old, has pockets on the bottoms of her feet that collect balls of mud, pebbles, sand grains, etc, and they stay until every week or so, I dig them out.
I've had other people insist she walks funny, like her feet hurt, but she's a huge Brahma girl, she waddles. And she's slow.
Have other people had this problem with their Brahma? Is there anything I can put into these tiny, but deep, pockets to prevent them from collecting debris?
So far, it doesn't appear that the tissue is irritated, but it does look like it would be uncomfortable.
To try to explain where these pockets are, imagine your palm is the bottom of Nancy's foot. The pockets present as dimples just below the webs of skin joining your middle fingers . Nancy's sister Diane has similar dimples or pockets, but hers aren't as deep so they don't accumulate debris.
I had a brain storm just now about using spider web silk to stuff into Nancy's foot pockets. I need to go find some now, not going to be easy with a blizzard going on outside.
Has anyone with Brahmas had this problem with foot pockets? What did you do about it?
Recently found out about Brahmas so I'll have to read this thread (ay yi yi) and find out how to get some for our new farm. Thanks to all who have contributed. Off I go to read!
