At fair Lewis Cunningham judged the fancies. Told me my one bird would have taken first if she was in better condition. Partially my fault she isn't because I pulled broken feathers too close to the fair and partially because they are beginning to molt. He really liked the coloring on the primaries of my light females. By Ohio National everyone should be finished molting and then my birds can really shine!
Thats the thing.....having them at the peak of condition when the shows come around. I don't know how many times I have had a hen or cock go into full blown molt right before a show. Not as much of a problem with pullets and cockerels. The judge was right to point out the importance of condition. Its the icing on the cake. It seperates the winners from the "also rans". Keep up the good work!

I have zero show quality birds and I hope someday I could get into showing. If I do I will of course be showing Brahmas. I hope to learn much here.

I've culled down to ten Buff pullets and Seven cockerels, twelve light cockerels and seven pullets(35 total).....from the about one hundred I hatched this Spring. First show is Sept 8. I will just show Lights at the first show, Buffs are a bit slower to mature. Light cockerels seem to be very good quality, and the Buff females. Too soon to tell on the Buff Ks. None of the light Ps stand out particularly. How about the rest of you who show? How did your hatches go and are you getting ready for show season? BTW, if anyone cares...I had pizza for diner.

Tim

What show are you going to be attending? Can't wait for the show season!

A pullet is a female less than one year old. At one year they are considered hens. I would not say one variety is any more hardy than another. It may very well be true with a particular hatchery I suppose.

Oops! I do know that, really.

In the mutt group, I've got 36 16 week old pullets, so I've gotten used to saying pullet. Brain fart.

My son's big winner a 5 and 1/2 month old pullet. Tim, this pullet is from the Buff x Light cross.

Very nice bird dak. Looks to be in great condition. The little feller with the big buckle looks rightfully proud, and way better looking than the old guy posing with Tim's deer.

Back a couple years ago, when my youngest daughter showed her old english bantams at our local county fair (mid July), you could bank on her males blowing their main tail feathers the week of, or week before fair.

I can relate. I bought him a nice pair of Black OEGBs last fall. They are both currently a molting mess.
