Like I said it may or may not work out. Thats why I would try and do both if you have enough birds. Since you only have two of Darlene's pullets maybe you should maintain that line seperatly at least one more hatch. You could do two trios of pure Neff, and just try one pen with a Hobbs K over the two other Neff Ps. You can see if it works out while maintaining the two lines.

It depends on how big and where the spot is. Hows her type? Can you post a pic?

I did not mean to indicate color is not important. IT IS! Type should always come first in my opinion.

Tim
What do you think of crossing one (one of them is much nicer than the other one) of the 2 Darlene pullets with your pick Neff rooster, then using the best rooster from that cross over all of the 8 Neff and Hobb's pullets since I am short on space?

A long time Ameraucana breeder said this about color vs type ~ "BUILD YOUR BARN, THEN PAINT IT" I try to go by that. When I get both good type AND good color on my birds I get VERY excited!

I will take a picture of the pullet with the black spot on her side and post it. I don't think her type is as nice as some of her other hatch mates.

Sorry to just jump in, I hope you all don't mind. I purchased three Light Brahama chicks about 3 1/2 months ago. They have become my favorite chickens as they are the most friendly, lovable chicks I have had. The run to the fence every time I come out, let me pick them up and snuggle with me when I pet them. None of the other breeds I have are as tame or petable. I am sure they are not show quality, but they are definately pet quality and are beautiful to me.

I have a couple of questions. They have been very slow to show any interest in the trainer roost I put in their coop. It is a flat 2x4 stacked on two pieces of 2.x4 so it is only 10" off the ground and is 3 1/2" wide. It is all screwed together so it is stable. They are just starting to use it and still seem a bit wobbly when on it. Is this typical? At what point should I raise it, or should I raise it? They are in a seperate coop from my other chickens and because they are so docile, will probably stay seperate.

Second question, at what point will they start laying? I have heard they are slow to develop so it could be longer than standard large fowl. I am not in a hurry, I just want to have an idea. They are large fowl and not bantams.

Thanks for your help! BYC is such a wonderful resource.
Hi there! I was afraid your post would get buried like some of mine do, so this will at least bring it to the current page. I'm a newbie, but have been researching this roost height thing. Apparently, Brahma's are snugglers who would be perfectly happy sleeping in a pile of pine shavings,so maybe they don't feel the need to roost. Sounds like your roost is a perfect height for when they're ready. If you do decide to move it up, there's a good chance of leg injury when the big heavy birds jump down. If they have room to FLY down, there's less danger. Hope this helps you. At least you're back on the current page for someone who knows more than I do. As for laying, I think 6 to 10 mos.

Can someone please tell me just what those "designer Brahma's" are? Did they cross a Cochin with a Brahma? I mean if only light, dark, and buff are recognized, then what are the others? Tim,if you're the one answering this, don't risk getting spanked again

Also, if the buff is the latest one to be recognized, then is it a genetic mutation(in a good way), or was it humans messing around?
I have lots more questions, we'll see how this goes first.

Tim, I need HELP!
barnie.gif
I have looked at my 8 BBB roosters over and over and have finally narrowed it down (I think) to 2 of the Hobb's line (7 mo. old) and 2 of the Neff line (8 mo. old) roosters. I am hoping you can help me decide on one rooster from each line.

I am concerned that #1 Neff line rooster seems oversized and #1 Hobb's line rooster has a comb that the rows aren't straight.

Thanks!

Neff line ~ 8 months old

#1 & #2

Hobb's line~ 7 months old

#1 & #2

##
Neff #1 male
This male looks pretty noce, lacking a little in the saddle color. The wings seem to be showing a little Light bar going on and once you get this in it is very hard to breed out.

#2 neff male
I do not like this male at all does not show any Brahma substance at all, lacking in Hackle and saddle color, just appears to be a very narrow Brahma.

Hobbs male #1 is bt far the best of the four males look at the color of the hackle and Saddle, good back and nice wide open tail, head looks really good. Look at the overall type this male is showing nice chest and good wide back. The wing color looks great.

Hobbs male #2 will end up being a good male once he is allowed to mature. The Hobbs males are superior to the neff males .

Just giving you a different opinion.

Also if you have more of the Hobbs male how about posting some pictures of them also.

Its hard to tell much about width from a side photo. I think the flash makes it hard to get a good read on color as well. How about the wing on the #1 Hobbs male Don? Primary color does look very good, but what about the carriage? I do like his top-line. I would like to see the 2nd Neff male in a more relaxed pose. I won't set up your pens Chickee. You will just have to sort through the advice and make up your mind. Looks like you have a good foundation whatever you decide.
John and Darlene's birds are both heavily Bowman line birds. John did add some Arbuckle/Rust too I believe.

I should add BOTH are my friends and I have nothing but respect for them and their abilities as breeders/exhibitors. They don't breed junk!

Tim, I think the #1 male should of had his wing opened before taking a picture. I was not judging the breeders just the four males.

I never thought that Don. I was just pointing out they are both good breeders, and GOOD people.
