Hi everyone! I'm new here and hoping to get some questions answered?
I'm ordering blue/gold paitrage brahmas. Is this a pure breed or 2 different colors?
If I breed the babies what will I get pure or what? Thanks just a bit confused!
Neither of these colors are accepted in the Standard of Perfection. Gold partridge refers to a penciled variety that doesn't meet the Standard's description of Partridge. Specifically, the ground color is not reddish bay but gold. The pencilings are black. When bred together they produce more of the same, but double matings are usually needed to produce both good males and good females. These have been worked on by some dedicated breeders and the type and penciling is becoming very presentable.
Blue partridge refers to a penciled variety with the gold ground color but blue penciling. Blue genetics are the same here as with other blue varieties. Breed two blue partridge together and you will get 50% with blue pencilings, 25% with black penciling and 25% with splash penciling. (The splash males are primarily white and have red shoulders, also called red pyle.) A blue partridge with black penciling is essentially the same thing as a gold partridge. The blue partridge is not quite as developed as a variety here in the USA as far as I've seen.
If the Brahma's that you're looking at are matings of blue partridge (with blue penciling) and gold partridge, then you will get both blue partridge and gold partridge chicks, without the splash.
I hope I haven't added to your confusion. It may help to search Andalusian genetics.
Finally this is a trendy color right now. Don't grossly overpay. I just bought gold partridge chicks from a breeder that shows, from a line that holds its own at shows, for $6 each. The history of trendy birds is that a bunch of buyers rush in, the market gets glutted with sellers next year, and prices sink like a brick. (I learned the hard way ---- a couple times.)
