Im not promoting hatchery Birds John is a breeder .
but many wont tell you what their if they have one NPIP covers . so how can we buy from them i have asked many in my area

Just meant the two I quoted. NPIP doesn't cover hardly anything in most states, it's a state by state basis. If a breeder has NPIP, then they pass whatever their state is required. In WA State (where I am) that's Pullorum Typhoid and AI. They don't test for anything else, period. Other states might test for other things, wouldn't know but every state has the program on their website so you could just google it real quick. A hatchery that ships to every state may pay for supplemental testing so that they can legally ship to every state, but then you're dealing with inferior stock.

Hey everyone been looking for a nice, SQ hen or pullet for my 9 month old, Dark Bantam Brahma cockerel. Been looking everywhere for a nice hen for him. These birds just aren't easy to find!!

Quote: there are 3 breeders that ask for all tests to be Done by their state 2 in NY and 1 in Hawaii only one of those has dark brahmas so i have been looking for another . but no one will tell me what their npip covers . you as a breeder can ask for all the tests to be done if any issues with the state vet like they say you dont wanna know Id push it as i do wanna know . its really sad because i got MG from what i was told by a few is a reputable breeder . that is sad to me why cant the dark brahmas be clean ? look it up on the NPIP info only 3 are 100% clean of all diseases one guy has a hatchery small as he maybe but atleast he is clean John is not a hatchery and the other guy in NY was the name given to me by my state vet, the guy that roy got all his chicks from in Washington allegidly is a top brahma breeder has MG so i wont be going there again , so ill ask here WHAT does your NPIP clear you of any one can answer this and what have you asked to be tested of ?

Tammy,

I wanted to get back to you on this issue. I have checked with one hatchery in Iowa and with the NPIP coordinator, Andy Rhorer on this. Both told me that most of the hatcheries selling exhibition, poultry and game birds to small flock owners are not MG/MS clean. This surprised me very much since I had always assumed they were. Just goes to show you about assuming anything doesnt it?

In order to change this situation, we would either need to change our import rule on poultry (this is possible but takes time an we will consider doing this in the future) or bring it up as a proposal at the next NPIP meeting in 2013. Sad to say that the 2010 meeting was held in Portland and it would have been a perfect time to discuss it.

In the meantime, I think what I need to do is write an article for the Alternative Poultry Assn. newsletter to alert people about MG/MS and that the birds they order from out of state hatcheries are only certified as pullorum/typhoid and AI clean. For buying birds within state or from your neighbors, the old axiom let the buyer beware is a good rule of thumb as well as the all in/all out practice.

Thanks so much for bringing this to my attention.

Don ( Don Hoenig, .state vet)

from roy who bought his eggs from the Dark Brahma breeder in WA who told him to keep them medicated . that only lasts as long as the birds are medicated and even worse makes it into a Super Bug

I've talked to a couple people with commercial flocks. They say it will be years before they get it under control. it is bad stuff. They told me the cheap test to do, but i'm going to consider the first coup compromised. get rid of all of them in that building. Vaccinated all birds with MG Bac, an inactive virus vaccine. They said bleach it out and leave for 3 days, use disinfectant and let stand for another day. Then disinfect again before introducing vaccinated birds
I do'nt think the second coup has been compromised, but will get vaccination anyway. The bad thing is if they have it, and are vaccinated, they wo'nt spread to each other anymore, but will pass through there eggs.
The 5 turkeys in the first coup are yours if you want them. Thursday will be 14 days without any antibiotic. They never have shown any symtoms, but they told me sometimes they do'nt. My freezer is completely full.
Thanks, Roy.

At 18 weeks of age, with no comb/wattle enlargement or redness (barely any pink to speak of), would it be safe to assume my Brahmas are pullets? I know they aren't entirely proper, especially since one has major VH and the other two are siblings (hatchmates), these are just to be nice, pretty layers for me. Of course, to be layers, they need to be girls! There are no pointy saddle or hackle feathers either. I know Brahmas take a little longer to mature than many other breeds, so figured I'd ask. Thanks!

I'm not really promoting hatchery birds, if you look back to where I started my Brahma project you would understand why I'm trying to get the two feed stores to carry some additional types of birds. I would like nothing more than to have the kids start showing high quality, breeder bred chickens. Unfortunately, first I need to get them off of the showing fighting stock and try to make sure that there is an ample supply of birds for them to choose from.

The only breeder that I am aware of in this area is one that I wouldn't even consider buying from. When a breeder has signs all over the place telling everyone to stay out, kind of makes me think about puppy mills. After visiting her facility, I can understand why she doesn't want anyone coming onto her place. It is probably the only facility that I've ever been to that I took my shoes and soaked them in bleach after leaving.

There are some nice breeders in the northern part of the state, and my hopes are that eventually I can be one of those breeders as well. Right now, I just don't have the stock to let any eggs or chickens go next spring. In the meantime, the next best option for the kids is to encourage the feed stores to carry some "different" birds, not just the standard barred rock, sex links and rhode island reds. I suppose I could just let them show nothing at all, or even just keep the fighting stock for showing (and fighting, although it is illegal now). Sorry I started such a heated debate, didn't mean to.

Oh, and she doesn't have any brahmas that I'm aware of. She claims to be a Marans breeder, but I don't think so.
