Brahma Thread

Feeling down as I lost one of my young Naked Neck hens to cancer today....then Whitey managed to make me feel more cheerful as he kept his weird beedy green eyes on two of the Brahma girls laying on the dog's bed.

It really stinks to lose a chicken.(even if it is a naked neck, they are not my favorites )

I love brahmas though; thier feet are just awesome!

I have buff brahma bantams. They are very good chickens!

I don't know, it depends how much outside space they have. Right now my brahmas have 20 square feet per bird inside and 160 square feet per bird of fenced in run, but I think thats a bit overkill lol.
Also, most show quality large fowl are so big that they should either have no roosts or very low ones.

The run would be a 7ft x 12.5 ft dog run with supervised free range. I'm considering doing the coop 4x6 and putting it in sideways. I doubt I'd be getting show quality stock

I'm just interested in eggs!

4x6 would definately be enough for 4 hens, probably 5 or 6 if you wanted, especially since they have somewhere to go outside.

Any of ya'll had your Brahma's for a while? I'm swapping out my RIR's for LT/Dk Brahma's - I understand that the maturity time is longer for the Brahma's - so I guess they'll take 5 - 6 months to start laying correct? Also, I hear they don't lay as heavy as RIR's either - how often do ya'lls lay? Egg size about the same, etc?

I have about 12 right now (mix of LT's & DK's) - I want to add to my flock - any recommendations on where to get them from? I got the ones I have from a local feed store but they are done till fall now. thanks..
