Yesterday I got my first brahma egg! Today I got my second. It was cracked so I opened it and it was fertile! FINALLY! I'm so happy. You can bet I will be setting these!

Congrats KinderKorner.. how old are your hens?

my brahmas pair are only 10 weeks old so I know the first egg is a long way away -- but they are ahead of the eggs in the incubator..

I have turned off, cleaned up and put away the incubator. I ended up with 35 buffs and 65 lights. Hatched 8 large darks from ordered eggs, and about 15-20 Dark Cornish Bantams. The bantam Dark Brahma eggs I ordered failed to develope. I think they were badly shaken in transit as most aircells were scrambled. Four of my eight Buff females are broody, I only have eggs under one.
I had hoped for 50 each of the buffs and lights. Most of the people I have talked to have had more difficulty hatching buffs than lights, Lori being the exception. Not sure the cause/reason for that situation? I'm thankful for all the lights, I feel like I have plenty to choose from. I was even able to sell quite a few light eggs, and most of the buyers enjoyed excellent hatches. I am hoping that will increase interest in Brahmas. I encouraged those who bought the eggs to join the ABC, several have.
Now we just have to get them raised! This is the most stressfull time for me. I ALWAYS struggle with the culling. I have been at this for a few years now and I still need to develope a better feel for culling. I know the correct answer is to feed them out and keep them as long as possible. I am trying to keep better, more accurate records that might give clues in the future to earlier culling.
I would be very interested in hearing other's experiences and observations. I am in continual persuit of knowledge.

Congratulations KinderKorner from Thailand too! That's so exciting....I can only imagine how you must feel!

I would be very interested to know how old your hens are too? My single hen and 2 roos are only about 3 months old right now, but I'm eagerly waiting for my hen lay her first egg and then to be ready to have chicks so I can get on and expand my little flock

Thanks!

Oh my hens are 2 years old. They have laid before but not at my home. I purchased them back in Nov. and they just never started up since because of the stress. But I'm so glad they are finally settled into their new home. Can't wait to hatch some babies.

Sadly my Brahma rooster that came with them died months ago. So they are in with a different rooster.

But I'm still eagerly awaiting babies. I'll show my surprise babies off after I get some.

I think you guys might love them almost as much as me.

I have a bunch of extra buff laced brahmas that are not in the breeding pen. Would you put any of these birds in the breeding pens? Someone told me no roosters with any black. I have not heard about that? Do I want the ones with no black? Suggestions?? The roos in my breeding pen are beautiful and do have a splash of black and I like that but is that a no-no?
these two are in the breeding pen

Thanks for your response in advance!

Hello all.. I have a bunch of Lt. Brahma's (and one tiny runtly Dark Brahma) that I hatched from eggs purchased on BYC. They are two weeks old and I was hoping to start trying to identify some possible sex characteristics and selling some off. Are there any early signs of males/females? Also, I am not a breeder but I might want to venture into that some day. I want to have quality birds in my back yard too.

What should I look for as "best" qualities of these guys/girls? Any advice appreciated and welcomed

Here are a few pictures of the same few birds. Boy are they BIG babies!!
