Does any one else have problems with the buff Colombian pattern? I have noticed that on the wings most of the chicks I hatched have better coloring on the secondaries than on the primaries ( primaries aren't as "neat" ). There is black or buff ( depending on bird ) bleeding through where it doesn't belong. Some birds have it worse than others. The rest of the bird's coloring is fine for the most part.

That tends to pop up in the Buffs and lights. Thats where "breeder birds" become neccesary. It is good to save a male or two with solid black primaries. Breed them to the females with over colored primaries and secondaries. The chicks out of this breeding should have better wing color. If you breed best showbird to best showbird your color will slip. I might add, if you are looking at the primaries of young birds, they usually improve as the molt them out and get their final adult feathers. You may just need to let them mature.

Tim, you are correct on what you say. I would also ad to keep a close eye on the under color as this will also cause the problem, You will not see this wing problem if you make sure the under color is dark enough.

They should be fine and some a little bit dark. I have LF buffs from Darlene and personally I don't like them. My one bird should of been culled a long time ago because she only weighs some where in the five pound range. I also have noticed they don't have very wide heads. My birds from Ron Yochum have very wide heads and the larger of the two weighs eight and a half pounds. Although I have seen in the poultry press that Darlene wins a decent amount with her bantams. This is my first year breeding brahmas so who knows I may be wrong on the whole color thing.
Thank-you for your opinion

Some advice on what faults to watch for in my chicks would be helpful if others would like to join in . . .

Thanks Tim. When you say to breed a male with solid black primaries to females with over colored primaries and secondaries does that mean ones with too much buff coloring?

I suppose so. Its typically the females that have the smuty primaries though. How old are the birds you are concerned about?

Oldest is 3.5 months old. The oldest looks good so far. It is looking like my birds will have wider tails than the rooster I used to make them. That is definitely something I was worrying about. The oldest is a rooster and he is already getting some weight on him. Last time I weighed him was at 12 weeks old and he weighed 4lbs. 7 ozs. I know they take a while to mature but I was just curious if the color pattern was something normal. Every single chick has better secondaries than primaries.
