Moregray, what a wonderful name! Does it have a welsh meaning? or is it just More Gray? I think it will be the name of my next dog or horse...

Both my little bantam BOYS live in the chick grow out pen and when I put new chicks in they herd them into all together. They protect them fiercely when ever they do the panic peep when I grab them. They are the best foster dads!
Can't wait to get my new eggs and hopefully some hens out of that.
LOVE LOVE LOVE this breed more and more every day.

Moregrey.....no, it's a bit weak really......Moregrey and Lessgrey are daughters of Littlegrey who is daughter of the matriarch Mrs Grey (who is a big grey hen!). Littlegrey was so named as she was smaller than the huge Mrs Grey and her daughters are Moregrey is darker than her sister Lessgrey....all descriptive so I can recognise from a distance who is who. Massive, lumbering and boss.....Mrs Grey. Slightly smaller and less leg feathers...Littlegrey. Littlegrey's daughters who usually hang around together.....Moregrey and Lessgrey.

I also have had my Goldie Hen, Darky, Whitey, Bluey etc....no originality...all describe what they look like.

Brahma hens (and also some of the roos.) are lovely pets if a little time is taken to persuade them that you are no threat.I hope your next hatch is all hens, Helen.

I thought it was pronounced Mor-A-Gray

. Most of my chickens don't have names, so you are ahead of me. Had some Brahma's years ago and then just didn't get more when the passed on. Time to go back to them I think.

My Brahma hens really aren't laying yet, but they sure like to sit on top of the Easter Eggers' blue eggs and think they are their own eggs to hatch out. I keep reaching my hand under the Brahma hens when they are sitting in the nest box, hoping to find a Brahma egg...only to find they are sitting on a blue egg. Geesh girls, lay your own eggs!

This heat has been brutal on my chickens. In between 107-112 for the last week and we have another week of this to go. My Brahmas and Cochins are taking it the worst.

Lots of shade and fresh cool water several times a day. If the water gets hot, the birds won't drink it, if they won't drink...they die. The heat is hardest on the older birds as well. 107-112 is pretty typical here this time of year, fresh cool water is the main thing. We loose few birds to the heat.

Is the 2nd roo worth keeping to breed or should I start over?
It kind of depends on what your goals are. I suggest starting with the best birds you can afford from a reputable breeder if you goal is to show. A trio or a couple of pairs. If you are just breeding for personal enjoyment...go with what you have.

These temps are the norm here too for this time of year. I have usually kept all my chickens mixed in large pens. This is the first year that I have decided to raise and keep breeds pure. With the breeds seperated, its become more obvious that my Brahmas and Cochins don't do as well in the heat as my other breeds. They have stopped laying completely and eat less too. They have plenty of shade all day and I change the water too. This heat just wears them down.
