Brahma's are the breed we're leaning heavily towards for our backyard avian pets. If you didn't see my intro, I'm going to convert a raised dog kennel into a coop and let the girls, wife says no roos

, roam the yard freely with the aid of an automatic door. The coop will be approx. 30 sq. feet with the attached dog house at 7 sq. feet which I think will be for nesting. We're thinking 3 hens would do nicely in our yard.
Wife wanted Polish for the looks but I explained that a more docile, larger bird would make my life much more pleasant. This is not going to happen til spring cause I don't want to subject youngsters to our sometimes frigid winter. Who am I kidding, we live in north Idaho so we "most times" see some nasty weather.
So what's the best way of acquiring just 3 hens? Order from a hatchery and only order 3? Order 12 and raise them up and keep the 3 you want and give/sell the rest? Thanks for any input! Scott.

If you can get birds from a breeder (take it from someone who spent the better part of his life raising hatchery birds) you don't want to 50 years later get some good quality birds and wonder why you wasted a half century. Breeder quality Brahmas are indeed gentle giants, you will fall in love with them.

Blue Laced Red, now that sounds like a mighty fine bird. I have been pecked many times by other breeds but not so much by Brahmas. Must be the Wyandotte blood.
Was sorting my young birds today. One of the blue laced red project cockerels was convinced I was going to eat him, or something, freaked out and bit my hand. The other Brahmas were shocked by his outlandish behavior. I blame his Wyandotte ancestory.

Kind of hard to make out in photo, but how may birds can give you a heart shaped momento of their affection ?

Me either, and I hesitated to post that, but I thought it was it was kinda cute, I seriously do think this is a direct result of the Wyandotte cockerel I used to bring in the blue, that guy was nuts, compared to the typical Brahma.

Some of the blue laced red girls, and the too orange male.

Hello Gary,
I think I sent you on a goose chase and I am sorry about that. I matched my leg bands on the white birds with my records and they did not come out of the pen where the Sire was the Buff Laced Rooster, they came out of Big Silver. While I was looking at my records I got another disappointment, I have 2 big beautiful Gold Laced boys with beautiful foot feathering however they have the VH, I thought they came out of the Silver sire, but it turns out that they came out of the pair Breeding of the Buff Laced I mentioned in a n earlier post, so that hen also carries a recessive VH gene.

So now I am at square one again, I was planning on putting one of the sons of the old Buff Laced sire, in the hopes he does not carry a recessive VH gene over the 2 Buff Laced original hens not tested, I am thinking pair breeding is the best route? If either hen throws VH offspring I know that the male carries it too. Or if all the offspring come out clean from either of them then there is the possibility that the chicks are either clean or have a recessive copy of the VH gene. Now the question here is what is my next step to eradicate the VH? And how do I tell if the chicks come out clear which parent carries the recessive gene. I seems this VH is a real pain in the backside.
