Breda Fowl thread

The Cuckoo Breda we got from RFR of CA layed her first pink egg yesterday! 2 full oz. The Blue Breda we got from RFR gave us a smaller first egg at 1.75 oz and never got any larger after that. This Cuckoo is definitely larger in all respects. Her vulture hocks are huge where the Blue did not have much to show. But we loved our Blue and have one on order from someone who still breeds BBS Breda. I guess blue genetics even in dog breeding is delicate but we can't help loving the Blue. We love our Cuckoo! So glad we got a Cuckoo before RFR closed them out! Breda are so very docile and non-combative toward gentle Silkies or timid Ameraucana.

Smaller Blue Breda w/ not-so-big vulture hocks but had an amazing people-friendly personality

Congratulations! I never tire of looking at these beauties...I have a dozen on order from 2 sources....can't wait to see them! I have never had one as a chick..

Quote: The chicks are adorable. Probably some of the cutest I've ever raised. Big nostrils, lanky legs, feathery feet. Doesn't get much better than that.

Sylvester, where did you order your blues from this time around?

Thank you.

@chicken danz here on BYC is where I ordered my Blue from this time around -- one of my last remaining Blue Breda sources that I like. Mottled, Black, and Splash, seems to have plentiful breeders but Cuckoo, Blue, and pure White, are almost non-existent. chicken danz is NPIP but doesn't have that big a customer base for Breda (they sell many many breeds of unique poultry) but continue a small flock of Breda because they happen to like them so much. I'm so glad they do because so many other Breda breeders have either discontinued Breda breeding altogether or are interested only in Mottled. Dutch Connection still has Cuckoos, Blacks, & Splash but not Blues.

Many docile gentle breeds or rare poultry usually aren't reliable layers but the Breda surprised us w/ its production. I never thought we could have it all -- a rare and unique docile chicken that's also a good layer. Pesty-friendly as can be! -- and now that our Cuckoo pullet has started laying her first eggs she has been hungry to replace body nutrients for laying and is immediately in my face searching for food. She was more shy as a juvenile but is getting bolder and friendler now. I've noticed Breda have a hearty appetite preference for dry feed over wet and I don't mind providing all the feed they need for laying those nice eggs.

hello everyone iv noticed a few of yall were interested in blue bredas if you are trying to get all blue chicks when breeding Breda all you have to do is cross a splash Breda rooster to black Breda hens and you'll get all blue chicks or you can do it vice versa and cross a black Breda rooster to splash hens and you'll get all blue chicks that's what I done this year because the light blue Breda is my favorite also

Yes - I've ordered black, splash and mottled. Looking forward to getting my project up and running.

So glad to hear you like the Blue Breda too! I think Blues and Lavenders in chicken breeds are breathtaking! I'm not zoned for more than 5 hens/no roos so I have to depend on other owners to obtain my Blue pullets. How many Breda do you have? You MUST post pics for us Breda lovers to drool over
