I tried to phone the LHS and the voice mail was full, so I sent and email to the vice president of the LHS instead. I said that I was interested in helping and that I would like to give some of these animals a forever loving home, where they would be a part of my family, not just a "pet." The following is the response that I got back.
Thank you for your interest. All the animals taken into custody are being held on a 14 day medical hold. Until we receive enough donations to have the animals seen by a veterinarian we cannot release them to the general public. Most of the dogs have homes at the moment. We are an all volunteer group and depend solely on donations from concerned citizens such as yourself. Donations can be made to Livingston Humane Society PO Box 91 Walker LA 70785 Thank you,Terri Dunlap Vice President , Livingston Humane Society.http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/LA208.html
I replied back to the email and told her that I would be sending a donation in the moring and asked if the animals would be listed on petfinder.com whenever they were available to be placed in homes. I am currently awaiting an answer from her.
There is one thing that bothers me about her reply though. If all of the animals have to be held on a 14 day medical hold, then how is it that most of the dogs have homes already? I admit that I do not know how these organizations are operated, other than that they depend on public donations. That response just threw me off a little bit. My only concern is the safety of the animals.
I will keep all of you informed if/when I receive a reply back from her.
Thanks,
Dorothy
I was just on the phone with my sister and she was watching a news update on this story. So far, there is 240 dead animals found and 87 of those were in the mobile home. They said that there were also 5 children living in the home. I admit that I didn't see or hear this, but my sister made me hold on while she watched it and she told me this. If this is indeed the case, then there was 7 people living in that situation. That is just nasty!!!
