Breeding silkied Cochin bantams to the Standard

Number 5 just hatched! This one is a bit harder to tell as well, but I think it's a Blue. Sleepy baby :love

Ahem... I mean... I am very pleased. 🙂

Bonus, that egg was laid early in the week I started collecting the eggs for this batch, so it's very likely that most if not all of these chicks are Wyatt's and not Gus's! Gus, as a Black rooster, would not be able to father a Splash chick.

Two more chicks hatched out overnight and one just a few minutes ago this morning, bringing us up to 10 babies for this batch. The last egg I think is a goner, sadly. I looked at it last night when I was checking on all the eggs that had not externally pipped yet, and it was still alive then, but looks like it failed to develop fully. The bottom third of the egg is empty, and there's still a lot of room at the top of the egg around the air cell, too. So, once the 10th baby moves to the brooder, I believe the kindest thing will be to pull the plug on that last egg rather than prolong its life when it doesn't really have a chance. I don't think I will eggtopsy it, though... If I opened that egg up and find out it would have been a Splash, UGH!

Looking at the ambiguous babies that have now dried and fluffed out, I believe in total for this batch I have 3 Blacks, 6 Blues, and my one little Splash. I think one of my Blues might be a birchen based Blue instead of extended black based. That's more valuable in smooth-feathered Cochins as it supposedly helps with making nicer lacing, but not a problem to have in my silkieds as far as I'm aware anyway. Will have to mark that little one and keep an eye on her growing up!

Oh, and Marka has two babies out underneath her as well and her last egg has pipped externally, so she should have her full set out by the end of the day! :wee I didn't want to mess too much with her and her babies so I only peeked, but I think both of hers so far are Black.

I've set another broody up and will most likely be transferring eggs to her if she commits between now and lock down for those eggs, middle of this week. That will save me the headache of having to babysit the incubator since I only had a few corner coop eggs to set that week and filled out the row with Blue coop eggs. 😁 If I can get her and her sister to get along in the same pen, maybe I'll set her sister up, too. I have more broodies than I know what to do with at this point, but unfortunately nowhere else to stash them to hatch, so I'm going to have to bust several of them. :barnie That'll be something to figure out before next year, I suppose!

Well, I tried, y'all. Turns out, getting a good picture of 10 bobbling babies all at once is quite tough. 🤭 Here's an attempt at getting the whole batch from this weekend--see my Splash baby in the middle there? :love Someone is hiding because there's a total of 10 chicks here.

I don't know if I'll be able to keep up with the individual pictures, things have been a bit crazy here. But I'll at least try to get individual shots of them tomorrow, once they're all a bit more fluffed and sturdy.

Yay!!! Splash baby!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉 Protect her in bubble wrap 😆 They are adorable and precious!

Individual shots--also a difficult task with so many! I think I've figured out who is who here, though, based on their markings! :yesss: That's better than last week's babes. My head was spinning trying to tell them apart!

I suspect this little one is also a birchen-based Blue, though the light throat patch is throwing me 🤔
