I hate leghorns, hamburgs, leghorns, hamburgs, OEG(Standard size-love the bantams)leghorns, hamburgs, rosecombs, sebrights, basically, asils, shamos, basically any breed that is extremely flighty, hard to tame, or is just intimidating to behold. Other standard breeds like rhode island reds, barred rocks, etc that you see everywhere are just too boring for my taste. I like birds that make people do a double take and I like birds that are sweet and good mothers. Needless to say, my favorite breeds are silkies, cochins, and brahmas(talking about bantams, though I do love my standard light brahmas)! Silkies are so fluffy and such good mamas! Cochins are like little basketballs(talking about bantams, stay with me here). My standard light brahmas are getting soooo big and fluffy! Can't wait to start getting eggs from them!
All of you silkie haters have obviously never owned one and if you have and the chicken was mean, you had a one-of-a-kind bird lol. And I personally don't care if silkies don't seem to be "real" chickens. Who cares if they are "real" chickens? Define "real." Silkies are silkies in my book and I love them. If you want a breed that lays lots of eggs and is owned by most every other chicken owner, get a RIR or something. If you want to be different, get a silkie or something. Some of us don't care if they lay lots or eggs. Your birds lay more eggs. Mine will hatch whatever I put under them, whether it be a quail egg or a duck egg. Can you say the same thing? I say anyone can have a bird that lays lots of eggs. Not everyone has a super, non-electrical incubator that requires no turning of the eggs or humidity maintenance . I do. They are called silkies!
But I don't blame others for disliking silkies based on pictures. I saw pics of silkies before I owned them and thought "what in the world?" Don't want to offend anyone. I just like silkies lol. People are allowed to buy whatever breed they fancy and this is one of the things I love about chickens-the variety!
