My current flock consists mostly of pullets, with a few favorite hens (around 30 total). A lot of the pullets are laying now. Jack, my avatar roo will be 4 years old this coming spring. I don't want to replace him b/c he has been a wonderful roo, loves his babies, and throws the blue egg gene. However, I know that sooner or later, his fertility is going to drop. So, it's time to be planning towards the day that he will retire. Of all the cockerels hatched this spring, none were IME as good as Jack. I had ordered 2 BE cockerels. One of them is a big beefy boy, and at almost 6 months of age, he's about the same size as Jack, if not bigger. He has excellent coloring. His comb is not as tight as I'd like to see, but his feathering and size are far superior to the other BE.

Plan A: When I put the rest of the spring cockerels into the grow out pen, I left the 2 BE boys in the flock along with all of the spring pullets. However, they started being more aggressive with the pullets than I was willing to put up with, so they got shuffled back into the grow out pen.

Plan B: I started letting the BE boys out with about a dozen girls for a few hours before coop time in the evenings. Their behavior, even when only let out one at a time continued to be atrocious, with a lot of chasing down, and grabbing. No successful mating. I realize this is part of the learning curve...

Plan C: This afternoon, I let Jack and his girls out, and allowed Goliath to join them. Goliath tried to take liberties, and Jack immediately gave Goliath a "run for his life". Just what he needed. He's been a bit better behaved, and actually had what appeared to be a successful breeding.

Tonight, after hubby and I returned from our walk, I went out to shut up the run, and see to it that everyone was where they belonged. Surprise. There were 3 boys in the big coop. Evidently, Goliath decided he'd bed down with the big kids. And Jr. escaped from his confinement behind 2 doors in the grow out coop, and went in to the big coop to join Goliath. So... just to keep the peace, I'll be removing both BE boys for the night after they are good and settled. Tomorrow, we'll continue with plan C.

I am looking forward to seeing how everything works out. I wish you luck and hope things go as planned, if not better. Sounds like you have your plans set out very well. At some point when my one questionable pullet/cockerel (probably cockerel by the stance) is an adult I will probably have to go through this! Mind if I follow?

Thank you very much! Your not making it harder, it's always better safe than sorry and much better having backup plans. I rather make more of it than not enough!

I am hoping that Jack will willingly share the coop/run and his harem with Goliath this winter. (that would be plan A) The fact that Goliath and Jr were able to go into the big coop to roost tonight speaks favorably of that possibly working out. If there is too much roo drama for that to work this winter, I will possibly section off part of the Winter sun room and make a secure mini coop for Jack AND Goliath. (that would be plan B.) I really don't want to do that. Plan C would be to cull one of these boys, based on how well Goliath learns proper dating etiquette. I really don't want to cull either one of them before I can hatch some spring chicks, b/c I want to maintain both lines of genetics.

from Maine! (Where all the men are good looking, where all the women are strong, and all the kids are above average!)
..and steals Minnesota slogans?! :D

I have a new flock sire this year too.
Hatched out some Marans, this guy is the keeper and at 19 weeks is looking and acting pretty good so far.

Yeah. Love Prairie Home Companion. That slogan fits, so... I borrowed it. It's not stealing, if I give it back, right???? Did you ever listen to the episode about the Christmas goose?

So, how's your Marans acting with the ladies?

Goliath is still chasing and doing some grabbing. Jack is getting his exercise by chasing him off. I am surprised that the 2 boys can range and spend the day in close proximity to each other with out any altercations.

About the same, but my birds are confined.

Willie(the Marans) is trying some mounting(yeah chasing/grabbing with no success that I've seen), Woody(Welsummer cock) is dong some chasing, as are the older hens, even one of the pullets was intimidating Willie. Willie stays well clear of Woody, and me. I've handed a few pullets and hens in front of Willie, he shows concern but no aggression.
There hasn't been any serious altercations, mostly because Willie retreats pretty quickly, luckily my coop and runs are big and varied enough to allow. It's been very interesting to observe. Woody and a few hens will be gone nest week, so that will open another chapter of the story.
