Broodies Doing Great...Nora and Panda- Bad News re: Smoky's

Nora is being a wonderful mom after she got over the shock of that little mouse-like thing falling out of the shell, LOL. And Riley's baby keeps pecking her in the eye, poor thing. That is one little munchkin that is going to be a handful!

ETA: Nora has three babies. See them here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=373399

Panda is on Day 19 on Monday. I candled the eggs and removed three of them. They just quit, apparently. Anyway, she has two pure BR eggs, from Lexie and Fern, and one BBS Orp, Smoky's.

Nora is doing great with her babies; she's in a state of maternal bliss.

Decided to get Panda off for the second time today since tomorrow, being Day 20, she might be stuck on the nest for a couple days. DH said it smelled really bad in the nest. All three eggs had odor, but one was the obvious culprit, a very late death. We washed the other two, hoping to remove some of the germs, and discarded the stinky egg. Put it in a sandwich bag to candle and it made it to within the last couple of days, apparently. Sadly, it was Lexie's, my last chance for a daughter from her, since Dutch is now at a new home and Lexie is now suffering from egg peritonitis. So, there is a BBS Orp egg and one BR egg under Panda. I hope the bad one didn't hurt these two. We did change out the nesting material, too, and maybe should wash off Panda herself.

I am so sorry you don't get a Lexie baby- that would have been so nice! Hope the other two hatch and Panda loves being a mom- Nora seems like she is taking to it like a natural!

Today is Day 20 for Panda. After pulling out that smelly egg yesterday, and having that smell on the other two, I was very worried, but Fern's egg is pipped and as far as I know, Smoky's egg is still viable. Cross your fingers for these two chicks. If they don't make it, I'll have to run to the local feed store (

, and Ladyhawk knows why I say that) and buy a chick for her. REALLY do not want to do that. If I do, though, I may see if I can get another bantam, maybe a D'uccle or D'anvers. I wish I knew exactly what they looked like as babies other than the D'Uccle having feathered legs.

This feedstore gets shipments of chicks almost every week during the year, except for November and December. All their stock comes from Ideal, except for the occasional hen and rooster the owner's friend sells there. I won't buy a thing unless it comes directly from the hatchery, though. Her place has become so nasty in the last few years since she has taken on way too much. If you could send me a good pic of your lavs or porcelain D'uccles, that would be great. The bantams are come in mixed groups. I can usually tell the Cochins and Silkies, but the others may be a bit trickier.

I will send them to you tomorrow, if that's okay.
I have a writing class tonight so I gotta go do my evening chores now....

I have good lav pics, but no porcelain pics.
