My suggestion would be to find a breeder closest to where you live, to minimize the shipping stress. The American Buckeye Poultry Club has a number of members that sell chicks or hatching eggs, and the occasional juvenile. Check the membership roster here http://www.americanbuckeyepoultryclub.com/aboutus.php

And
a word of caution to anyone buying chicks or eggs -- do your research! Ask the Breeder/Seller for references; check the Better Business Bureau to ensure there are no complaints about the Breeder/Seller. Any inquiries about a specific person here in BYC should be made through Private Messages (PM) ONLY!! We cannot discuss specific Breeder/Sellers through the thread.

Janet the aggressive sales girl, go go go!!!

What Janet is trying to politely say is that the demand for my birds have been overwhelming last year and this year and you should buy from her instead of me. I have shipped late and have had issues refunding orders when people requested a refund. Yep, I did, yep I did. I hate it but I did, and I am still here taking flack and am not going away and will always sell buckeyes. Every order will be satisfied.

Now that being said I am down to the last 20 orders of the year and am shipping 8-12 orders a week through November, so if you want chicks this fall I can fill your order, but I am currently backed up.

Some people recommend chicks from their flock.
Some people recommend chicks from other flocks.
Some people recommend chicks from people that are closer.
Some people recommend chicks from a hatchery.
It is your choice, if you want convenience or reliability pick some up from a huge breeder or someone close.
If you want top quality buckeyes, seek them out, find them and get them.

The chick is the least expensive part of your buckeye endeavor, make sure you buy birds that you know will be satisfied with the quality of chick seek them out, find them and buy them.

If you are counting your egg numbers, could you please share them?

For instance, you counted eggs from Buckeyes last month, you would say June=35 eggs from 2 Buckeye 2 year olds from hatchery, heat an issue b/c we're in Texas, so fewer eggs. Something like that. Or if they are from prize winning birds or a breeder who breeds only for the backyard market.

Knowing the month(s) your numbers of eggs were kept and the age of the pullets/hens is important because obviously months with less light or heat. Basing a yearly average on what is happening in June is silly.

I'm wondering mostly if there is a difference in egg numbers between those who breed for show (actual shows) and those who breed for production and those who just breed for backyard chicken keepers or if there really isn't a difference in Buckeyes.

I'd share my numbers, but no layers until fall or after the solstice.

Can't help but admire your honesty and "can do" spirit, Dave.

Disclaimer: No, I do not know Dave at all. Never bought one of his chickies or eggs if he sells eggs.

Egg production… Earlier this year we did a little study regarding Buckeye egg production. Our study involved 11, year old hens, pastured, but not free range and ran from March through June. We would have liked to have run the study for a longer period of time but space requirements and the introduction of additional juvenile pullets to the flock made it impossible to measure production with any degree of accuracy.

We had lights on a timer that turned on at about 4 AM and turned off at 8AM each day. The birds were free fed a very high protein feed.

We calculated egg production as follows: the number of days in the month times the number of birds (example March, 31 days times 11 birds equals 341 chicken days), the number of eggs produced in that time period divided by the number of chicken days.

The results for the time period
.727 eggs per day per chicken… March
.645 “ “ “ “ “ April
.557 “ “ “ “ “ May
.424 “ “ “ “ “ June

Even though we can not say with certainty, since flock size has been increased with the introduction of juveniles, I think production is back to or over the May level.

Man I feel bad for all of you out in the mid west in that awful heat & some in drought.
I lived through that every year in NorCal, HATED IT!
We went down in 2000 & moved back here 2 years ago.
Had to go care for Grandma who was 94 & she died in 2002.
By the middle of April, it was 110 degrees, with rabbits & chickens suffering and it just about killed me.
Our egg production has been steadily increasing every month..but it is cool here, with an occasional 80 degree day, most days so far are overcast/cloudy/drizzly/monsoonal downpours/lows 54/highs most days are 65.
I will never complain about our weather again!

Hope you all make it through this heat & drought!

And Janet: Bee-utiful birds in your links !
Absolutely Fantastic!

and definitely not trying to get any animosity started, just not at all satisfied with hatchery stock i have purchased in the past and am trying to be careful with my money this time. thanks very much for the lead to check the members of the breed club, i think it answered a few questions for me already. again very sorry for any friction i may have inadvertently caused, i'm just trying to learn a little. but please feel free to correct me if i potentially cause any harm because i definitely do not want to be the cause of any ill feelings, and again thanks for the info. btw, i think theses birds are wonderful and am considering them highly, and definitely wants to be friends on here because i am new to breeding and will probably have a lot of questions for you experienced guys on here.
thanks again,
dave
