Buckeye Breed Thread

Hi,

I'm Diane in Ohio. I'm not new to the board, as I have been reading for about a year. I have started with the Buckeyes this past spring. While I'm not new to the board, I am new to posting and maybe don't get the etiquette. If so, would someone please tell me. I came here because you all are the experts.

I posted a pic in post 3198 about my cockerel. Would someone please give me feedback on how he looks? I have younger guys coming up, and I don't know if this bird would be good for breeding or if I should just wait and see what else I have.

Thanks,

Diane

I have a broody Buckeye hen (she is about 18 months old). I set 5 eggs under her 21 days ago. When I went to check on her this morning one had hatched and was dead. It looked perfectly normal. Is it possible she killed it? Should I take the other eggs away from her? I do have another broody hen who has been broody about 2 weeks, I could stick them under her probably.

Thanks for reading!!

From the picture, I don't particularly like NBNC too much. Flat back and low tail, and thinner shanks, similar to a R.I. Red. Does he always present himself like this? The rest look very, very nice. Nice job raising these birds, Janet!

Sorry you lost your chick. A couple things could have happened. The mother could have killed it, it could have gotten too cold, ect.
I'd wait at least another day before taking the eggs away.

Diane;
He's kind of young to give a critique. I'd say post a new picture of him in a month or so to give him a better shot.

OK. I will look at him again, and compare him to the bird you did like. This is a good opportunity to really learn how to assess them. It's very tough to just read the descriptions in the SOP and look at illustrations.

Thanks Janet for posting the photos for us, and thanks Mitch for the feedback.

Diane:

I'd like to see more pics. How old is he in the pic? How much does he weigh (at what age?)? His shape is good (look for that square shape like it is supposed to) -- don't keep those long in the back -- this gets to look more like a RIR. When (if you plan to) you breed him, watch that the black splotching I think I see in his breast feathers does not get out of control. (also, try to run from the green in the hackles-- I know it shows up a lot -- can't tell if he has a whole lot of that) Eventually, you want to breed that out. I get it in a lot of males too in varying degrees. It was in the first cockerel I had. If you can, post more pics.

Eventually, you want to get to this (see no black in the breast of this male):

Hello Punkster. I had the NPIP tester out Tuesday morning (they'd tested last November and now already again, in August)-- that is always exhausting, bloody work. It is hot, hot hot & HUMID -- be glad when Fall gets here.

After weighing a bunch of 16 week olds this past weekend, I must say that for the first time, I am real disappointed in weights. My growing Buckeyes aren't eating as much as usual -- the early onset of hot summer weather & its duration, IMHO, is contributing to this phenomenon. Anyone else seeing similar?

Chris
