Budgie Chat Thread!

I have 3 budgies! Got them February this year, they were just a few weeks old, momma had just turned them loose, so they are 9-10 months old. I have one female and two males. I believe they are common colors, a green, a light blue (the female) and a darker blue, but I would like to know the name of the colors, if someone would tell me.

Hard to see them clearly. The green looks like an opaline. This is a good site to look at colors and mutations.

Thanks! I never got them trained to be super friendly. They kinda trust me, like if they fly into another room and I go looking for them, they will climb on my hand or a stick, but in and on their cage, they don’t like me getting too close, and will hide from the camera.

I’ll check out those links and see what I can figure out.

My current ones aren't too friendly either. The only ones that were supper friendly was my first single male who I worked with a lot, and the babies I bred and raised. I handled them daily as they grew and they had no human fear.

The males are better, the female is the most skittish.

And I didn’t realize the color genetics was so complex! Well, I did, but figured mine would be more easily identified.
I’ll have to spend some more time on those sites.

Be careful. Budgies can get addictive just like chickens, especially when you start to see the colors and patterns that can be produced. There's also fat little English type budgies.

They are easy little pets, though some are messy. My females seem to throw things around more and chew through stuff fast.

In general males are more friendly, and bold, and more apt to talk and bite less, but both sexes can be nice little birds if worked with when younger.

As you can see I'm a big budgie fan. I bought a few 30 years ago and haven't been without any since.

Oh, something I’ve been wondering about.... I haven’t noticed any breeding going on. Is that unusual for 9 months old?

Oh, something I’ve been wondering about.... I haven’t noticed any breeding going on. Is that unusual for 9 months old?

Looks like one of yours is a yellow faced blue? The other a cinnamon wing maybe? Definitely lighter in the wing markings.

I don't usually see mating. It's usually quick. I see lots of feeding and sweet talking. If you are interested in breeding generally you need to give them a nestbox after bringing them into breeding condition. I used to sprout seeds for mine. I also think time of year is important too. Mine are currently molting.
