Buff Barred Cochin Thread

I bred the rooster from Doug to my buff barred hens for the second time this year and really improved the type. The only thing is she hatched 8 which were 6 buff barred males and 2 buff hens.

Danny, if anyone has typy birds I know it will be you! I am still loving my birds from you that I got a few years back!
Glad to know you thought Doug's were nice enough to use, too. I am really looking forward to breeding these birds and getting my buff barred program going.
Bummer on the colors of the youngsters but you still have plenty to work with. I am sure you will make some fantastic buff barreds!

After a long intermission, I have Buff Barred babies again!

I should take pics of my lone Buff Barred chick. I added 2 Coro Sussex chicks to the brooder when my Cochin was about 2 wks old and it didn't even peck them so later added 2 BC Marans chicks and everyone gets along. That little Cochin is so sweet it didn't even peck them. I think it was glad to have the company.

Stephanie I think the babies will be buff. They dont have the spot on top of the head but they are cute. I have figured out the genetics on Buff Barred yet does anybody else know?

It is on my to-do list. I have been studying peafowl lately and haven't jumped into the research on barred birds. I have some groups lined up for the project but they aren't laying yet so I am trying to finish the study on peafowl before jumping onto something else.

I have been breeding peafowl for 30 years. In fact had a hand in some of the mutations.

That is awesome, Danny, on the peafowl. I just inherited quite a few pairs and trios in all different varieties. I do not want to mess up this man's life long work since he passed away last year so I am trying to learn as much as possible and continue his breeding program with them.

I will be excited to get going on the buff barred project, too. I have some really nice birds and just can't help but stop and stare at them every day when I am working around the pens.

I will probably be at the Jefferson GA show in a few weeks. Hope you are coming, too!
