This is a 9 YO BO, does it matter how old they are? When did they start getting scrawny?

I think a lot of it depends on where you get them, as some hatcheries have higher quality birds than others.

That said, having seen American Orpingtons in shows, in person... Your bird is fluffy, yes, but she is tiny compared to those beasts!

and then her vet told me that she was "overweight" and im like "whaaa?". thought they were SUPPOSED to be fat LOL (all of my large breeds are fat)

that dude looks like a cochin
Yes! He was like a walking basketball! He was honest to God the sweetest cockerel I have ever encountered, but sadly he got fly strike and even after me trying everything, passed away 😞 He was a massive bird and he wasn't even close to maturity yet! Your Orpington looks a bit fluffier than most hatchery stock and is a pretty bird! In comparison to the English or American show stock however, she would look much smaller and less filled out! Still a pretty bird :)

Nothing quite gets my eye twitching as much as "Plymouth Barred Rock". It's like saying "Orping Buff Ton" or "Amerau Wheaten Cana" .

Barred is the variety.

Plymouth Rock is the breed.

Barred Plymouth Rock.

It is not complicated.

The hard part about those is pronouncing d'Uccle properly. 🤣 Maybe that's why it keeps getting left off!
Oh my gosh the Barred Plymouth Rock thing cracks me up. I've thought about trying to correct people in some of those threads, but figured trying to explain the nuance of it would just be a waste of typing 💀

....And that's why I have never really mentioned it before on BYC

Some people just get ideas in their heads and no matter what anyone else says, even respected members of the community, these people will not be convinced otherwise. And I'm not on BYC to argue, I get plenty of stress in my day to day life without that! So, yeah, you won't see me correcting anyone on that, either. 🤣

(For the record, I am not referring to anyone here. ;) )

Well okay, we thought the few we had were pretty sweet and one did raise my first little Runner duck - but made her TERRIFIED of water 😬😬😬😆. But of course the reason she had to raise a duckling in the first place is cuz

THEY GO BROODY ALL THE DANG TIME!
😣

DISCLAIMER: This is a thread for you to put everything you hate about buff Orpingtons. Please keep all BO hate in this thread and do not carry it elsewhere.

This is for anyone who hates buff Orpingtons to rant about them. This is strictly BUFF Orps. Not Orpingtonss in general. Though I don’t mind if you rant about all orpingtons. ;)

But if you like most Orps, just not buff, you are welcome here too.

If you are a buff Orpington LOVER do NOT come here and get angry or call us stupid for hating buff Orps. I’m all for bickering. But if you wish to argue about why buff Orpingtons are great please make your own thread and tag me in it. I will even link it in this post for others who want to bicker.

If you love buff Orps this is not the thread for you and go show your love for those vomit Orpingtons in this thread: https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/calling-all-buff-orpington-lovers.1408941/

Now don’t be fooled. I don’t hate all Orpingtons. Just buff Orps and hatchery Orpingtonss. Buff Hatchery Orpingtons being the worst of both worlds. I would die for a English lavender cuckoo Orp, or and English Blue Laced, Or really any English Orpington that isn’t buff. Especially if they are @ColtHandorf ‘s English Orps. :drool

***Adding Buff Orpington Rant to Beginning Post***

My complaints about Buff Orpingtons:
  1. Solid Buff is UGLY. Not just on Orps. But on all breeds in general.
  2. I HATE when people call their Buff Orpingtons “buffs“ “buffies” “buff” “Buffy” etc... Orpingtons aren’t the only breeds that come in buff you know.
  3. I HATE HATE HATE. When people are looking for breed recommendation and people say “Buff Orpingtons” why not just say “Orpington?” The color doesn’t change the breed you know.
  4. The common hatchery Orps have ZERO fluff. Orpingtons are suppose to be a fluffy breed but instead you get skinny non fluffy things that look like this 🤮: View attachment 2577065
  5. They are way overrated. Too much hype for what most people call “Buff Orps“ are really just hatchery production birds far from what an actual Orpington should be.

Ha...yeah my girl is named Buffy...she goes broody consistently and crazily. She looks demented. I have used her to explain hormones to 10 year olds! I've had all sorts of breeds over the years but she is the Broody queen. BUT I do think she's pretty!
