So they ARE forgivable, then. ;)

What about how sweet and cuddly they are? My smooth-feathered Cochins aren't nearly as sweet as my silkied Black line. :love Though I will be fair and note here that my silkied Reds are sketchy. 🤣

But they all have those soft and fuzzy feathers that they keep all their lives rather than just having them as chicks :love And they have the benefit of having those soft, fuzzy feathers without being Silkies, so they have no crest, and therefore have actual faces! :love :love That's gotta be worth something, right?

I know, I know, it's the same tired thing I say every time, but... UGH, I just love them so much! 🥺 I was so afraid for years that I was the last one with them and they mean the world to me. The only reason I even have my smooth Cochin bantams was because I was preparing to outcross the silkieds just to keep my line going, I was so desperate not to let them die out. It truly breaks my heart that they aren't more popular, while frizzles are all over the place and their feathering is a lot less functional (and less pretty  ) than silkied feathering. It's such an injustice. 😩

Sorry, I was not intending to go all soapbox there, but I guess I am passionate about my beloved munchkin fuzzies :gig Sad and Angry away at this post, I can take it. 😊

Yeah, but if you delve beyond the people panicking about their accidental meat birds, it's pretty widely accepted that you can get Cornish X to live longer than a few months with special care. My experience with hatchery red sexlinks was quite the opposite. Aside from two that I lost to a predator before they even came into lay, and two that made it to ~5-6 years of age, every single one of my red sexlinks died at about 3 years of age from something related to their reproductive tract no matter what I did to try to avoid it or fix it. It happened with just a few of my hatchery Rhode Island Reds and Barred Rocks, but not with the same frequency or predictability. Those red sexlinks just are not meant to live long lives with their high egg production. 🙁
Yeah, I’ve heard it a ton with sex links but not as much with other breeds oddly and I haven’t experienced it with my own hatchery breeds of various breeds

Old breeds ??? Technically the hatchery ones are the same breeds even if they’re crap quality

My understanding (and I certainly could be wrong, of course!) is that 'heritage' in chickens refers not only to the older breeds that were popular before high-production hybrids came onto the scene, but also the lines of them that stick to that classic standard; i.e. you would not find a heritage Rhode Island Red who is anything but that deep, rich mahogany color of the high quality lines, or a heritage Barred Plymouth Rock with anything but those neat, straight bars on it like show quality specimens, etc.

That does make sense!! But I guess I always figured it was like heritage lines or something vs hatchery lines but the breed itself still technically was? That’s probably wrong though 😂🤣

My personal opinion is that silkied anything other than Silkies are vile. Especially BC's.

They're sweet because they're BC's. Which is part 1 of the 2 reasons her crime is somewhat forgivable.

But Silkies have no faces. And their feathering is so soft and fuzzy and irresistible. 🥺

Seriously, though, to each their own. I have not had the same experience with my bantam Cochins (if all of them were like my Black silkieds, they would probably be at least tied as my favorite breed with my darling Dorkings ;) ), but I understand that that is likely a difference in lines and I got birds from a poorer line in that aspect. I respect that others have their own opinions and some don't like the silkied Cochins like I do, which is why I asked before even posting their pictures here.

I got one that is worthless. She does not lay eggs. She eats, drinks, poops and sleeps. She is for sale. Free to anyone who wants her. lol!! Really she is a sweet girl to all the babies in her pin at the moment. Like any other chicken she loves to scratch around in the yard.

How old is she?

Of course they're still better than other breeds. They're still BC's. Post all you want. They're still adorable by default.
