Bumblefoot in a Silver Appleyard duck

All right, so I found a 10 year old bottle of Amoxicillin in my med cabinet. I need to give her between 288 and 345 mg twice a day. Unfortunately, it's in 500 mg capsules, which means I have to open them.

I do not have a scale that will register milligrams, BUT I do have some smaller, empty capsules. Three of them will hold exactly 500 mg with no extra room. If I gave her two each dosage, that would be 333 mg for the two of them together. I'm waiting on confirmation that this is okay, though. I could get it into her about three days faster this way than if I have to order a scale. I am planning on trying to remove pus tomorrow.

I don't like this. I don't like any of this. :barnie I think I'll buy Kathy a flight to here and have her show me what to do.

I opened Hailey's mouth and poked around a bit to see if I could see where the pill isn't supposed to go. I can't. :hmm I watched some videos but she won't cooperate like the ducks in the video and I don't know what I'm doing like the people in the video. Bad combination. Dosing length is 10--14 days, which means I have to get 56 of these things down her throat.

I’m wondering if it may be ok to just give the whole 500mg since it is 10 years old and some of it probably has degraded and thus not 500mg anymore?

If you are uncomfortable with getting the pills down her throat, I would try sprinkling it on her favorite food. Does she like canned tuna or chicken? Sprinkle it on there and don’t offer her any other food until she eats it? Just coming up with some ideas for ya.....

That I don't know. She stuffs anything she can down her piggy little throat when she's outside but she's not eating as much now, poor thing. Ducks are bad with not eating when they're stressed. Tuna is a good idea, though might it dissolve the capsule before she eats it?

The last time I had a long term issue with a duck she quit eating entirely for a week. I ended up getting crumble, prying her bill open, and putting the food into her mouth. She couldn't spit out the crumbles like she could with pellets.

Poor girl....... I a couple of my ducks stressed and traumatized. But I coupled two of them together and kept the lights a little dim and tried to talk softly. But I realize every animal is different. You’d waste $1.50 if she doesn’t like it. Someone else may come up with a brilliant idea.

She's got a blanket over her cage & I'm not messing with her today. Hopefully she'll start chowing down soon :fl

Definitely nothing to lose. I have more than enough pills anyway.
