Bumblefoot, Surgery and Follow Up - NY area Vet Recommendation

Hi MG! I hope that your Almost Red will be alright, my prayers are with you. Thank you for the link which we viewed the video of the procedure, this is what guided us. When we undertook the procedure, I think that since the scab mostly detached itself prior to us starting the procedure was not in our favor. Since it was nearly detached, the outer edges of the circle were hard and callused. That was why we were unsure if we were able to get the core It seemed like forever, and frankly I was very upset, but Connie was a trooper. She was definitely stressed after ward. I am going to be re-bandaging after coffee this morning and will provide an update. We are going to continue to soak it in Epsom Salt to try and soften the area. We are still looking for a vet. Unfortunately, it does not appear that vets in our area want to be bothered with tending to chickens. We are still looking though.

Question: If we are able to find a vet and secure an appointment, please confirm with me that I need to keep her quarantined from the rest of the flock due to bio-security threats?? The quarantine is not a problem it is the re-introduction back into the flock that is the fun part. Thanks again MG! Best regards, Martha

This is a picture of the bottom of her foot this morning while we were changing her dressing. What do you think? Thankfully she has no lameness but I note that there is a little red around the edge of the circular indention. Will give her another soak with Epsom Salt tonight to soften up the tissue around it prior to redressing. Is the red around the edges normal? Hope you are having a great Mother's Day!

I have also attached a picture of our Connie.

Seeing the picture today it does look like there is more in the area. Are you going to go in and try to take out more?

Hi,
If you get to the vet ask if Connie should be quarantined. If the vet has had avian flu patients or other disease that fowl get you might ask him.

Is this tissue?

I believe that there may be more in there. The outside of the circular indentation is hard and callused. It does not appear to be fleshy. When we cut into it there was no stringy substance nor any signs of an infection. There was only bleeding. How long should we wait before attempting it again. If the scab had been intact it may have been a little easier. This was our first and hopefully our last bumblefoot. It was difficult cutting down and we were all stressed. I have been soaking it so that the skin will soften up. I noted a little pinkish on the bottom of her foot when we just changed her bandage.

Connie sure is pretty.

Thank you. I do not know her breed, but she is a shy girl who likes to sit on my lap and tuck her head under may arm and take a nap while she is being petted. She is a sweetie.
