Bumblefoot surgery Update - RIP Duckie :(

My duck is fine. Right now he is splashing around in the bathtub having a grand ol' time. I'm gonna try to have another go at it. Got real busy this week, so haven't had a good time to sit down with it again. If I can't make decent progress, then I will try to contact the Waterfowl Rescue.

He's gonna be so spoiled by the time this is over that he'll be a house duck for sure!! Got any duck diapers???

I was reading a post about bumble foot some months back and a poster was talking about Tricide-Neo for soaking the foot and not having to do surgery, so I ordered some it's been a while so don't remember where I got it from but if you go on line and type the word in I'm sure you could find it easy enough. Good luck. P.S. I haven't had to use it but have it in case.

Okay. Here are updated photos of attempt #2. It bled much less this time. I was able to cut out all of that yellow/white colored hard stuff. I am now down to what appears to be reddish pink flesh. Tell me what you all think.

He is already getting spoiled with the warm baths! No, no diapers. Don't think hubby would go for that. Besides, a few of my dogs have a taste for feathered cuisine.

I know it sounds scary but if it were me, I would try to make one semi-deep cut right in the middle of the red area, clean it all out so you can get a good look down in there and see if you can see the "core" or "seed" of it. I had to take care of a small bumblefoot with one of my roos before but thankfully it was not nearly this bad, his was quite easy to cure with just cleaning and Neosporin with Vet wrap afterward.

I had a calf last year that I took in, she had a HUGELY abcessed ankle and i finally had to make a pretty deep lance cut to open it up, it did a world of good for her though, she walks on that foot again now.

It was scary but necessary, definitely get some help from the Rescue if you need it, i've heard only good things about them.

In any case, you've made some good progress - I'd encourage you to keep up with the soaks and packing antibiotic ointment in there to fight the bacteria until it is all finally resolved.

I do read about the "seed" or "kernel" needing to come out. Is it possible this bumblefoot is some kind of fungus? In that case, something like oil of oregano or tea tree oil might be useful.

I wish there were a picture encyclopedia of foot problems and their resolution, not just one or two examples but a variety of cases from mild to severe, with appropriate treatment that can be done by mere mortals. I picked up a book of poultry diseases and found just a few pictures of extreme cases of bumblefoot on chickens' feet.
