Bumblefoot surgery Update - RIP Duckie :(

You're right, I am not happy with the way the poor guy's feet look. It just bled like crazy and seemed to be hurting him. I soaked his feet on and off all that day before digging in. Didn't seem to help too much. I'll keep doing it though. I do have sharp instruments. Sorta like exacto blades. I am so not looking forward to having to do this to the other foot too. I've come to the conclusion that this might be a multi-day battle.

I think some numbing materials are not healthy for ducks, but if it won't harm them otherwise, it's an idea.

Apparently the big infections can be the dickens to work out. I read a post from Terrielacy about getting a bumble off a chicken's foot, using something like bactine and then working the edges loose before popping the core out.

This reminds me of a wart I had on my foot long ago. I had to keep loosening it around the edges, then I was able to pull the whole thing out. But it took some doing to loosen it.

(I apologize if that was TMI

Yeah, this is gonna be a stinker to get loose. The edges do not wanna come loose. I had soaked it on and off all that day. I will probably try again today.

You are in NC, so I would get a call in to Jennifer at Carolina Waterfowl Rescue.
She is expert at treating these things. She talked me though treating bumble and other things many times.

My Buff duck had a bumble on one of her feet several years ago. It was quite large, like your ducks and she couldn't walk on it. I tried all of the methods you did by soaking and strying to peel off layers. I work for an oral surgeon, so I brought home sterile blades and tried to work on it, but couldnt get the nerve to be aggressive enough. I ended up having the doc I work for come up and do it for me. He's an excellent oral surgeon and now an excellent duck surgeon too. The bumble went very deep. We did numb her foot with a local anesthesia, incised open and curetted the inside part of the cyst out. The material is very dry and does not remove easily. We cleaned all out, rinsed out with a betadine solution and sewed the incision closed. She stayed indoors on clean bedding for 2 weeks and a baby sock on, and was also on oral antibiotics. Her foot is beautiful today and we have shown her at shows and its not even noticable.
