Thanks for the advise! Some of the 'scab' came off when I scraped it after his bath. Couldn't tell if if there was normal tissue or not underneath. I have delt with many other things in my time with poultry and waterfowl while I was growing up, but we never had bumblefoot. I even helped my mom sew up a New hampshire hen that got sliced by the Rooster during mating. Now that was dicy! Should I put ointment on and wrap it now?

Oh, ok. Is there a way to anesthetize (sp?) the area, or will they deal with it like chickens do?

They would deal with it like chickens. Keep a loose towel over their heads and it would keep them quiet and dark. They may make some ouchy sounds but as long you have a sharp knife, steady hands and strong stomach, they will be ok.

I've got a very strong stomache as long as he doesn't screech in pain. I will start on this tomorrow. He is spending the night in my bathroom. After bathing, it's just too cold to put him back outside, even though I have a heat lamp there if he needs it. I will try to remember to take pics and will post findings here. Thanks everyone! I hope I can get the little fellow back on his feet. He is so docile and friendly.

We went through that last winter with our ducks. We took the worst one to the vet who put her on antibiotics and metacam (anti-inflammatory) but I don't know if it really helped. We soaked her foot in saltwater, then peroxide, and tried to pick the core out. We did this every night for...I can't remember but at least a week if not two. The vet painted a nasty picture for all of our ducks but they survived and are just fine. It never totally went away but none of them showed any problems all last summer and so far this winter.

I did a search and it looks like fattie did bumblefoot surgery on her crested duck. Maybe you can PM her.

Also, nettie has dealt with bumblefoot and makes neoprene booties for post-op care.

I'd still keep soaking it and applying antibiotics often.

So, since he has it on both feet, do I go ahead and do them both? Or do one and then the other another day?
