Buying Silkies at a show

Be glad you didn't buy that lavender silkie, and feel sorry for the person who did. I dont think that lavender was all it was advertised to be... and at $1200 it is too good to be true.

That is the problem with Silkies. People start breeding them and then they are only interested in the "color of the week." They see what people are willing to pay for these "designer colors" and they drive prices through the roof. They breed ANYTHING they can get their hands on to get the color and don't pay any attention to other aspects like top knot size, tight wings, toe spacing, etc... So at the end of the week, when the market is flooded, all you have is a bird with a hint of what was once the "color of the week," and is for all other purposes a pet quality bird. These things RUIN bloodlines, create genetic nightmares, and dont do anything to preserve the breed. And after the "money breeders" get their price, they hightail it and leave the dedicated breeders with a HUGE mess to clean up.

I got a black cockeral I will sell ya for $200! I'd even ship him to NY..LOLOLOLOLOLOL, thats halarious, I never heard of chickens selling for that much before. I do have a regular black silkie roo for sale but im sure he is not show quaility..I got him at the feedstore as a chick. Tryin to sell him for $5 because I have a white one and we like him better.

PS i wouldnt pay that much for a chicken, a dog or any animal short of a horse. There are too many good ones in the world that cost alot less. I guess someone who was MAD into showin might though.

The reason why there are SO MANY "good ones" is because people breed any two birds who have the right equipment to make a chick. They don't care about "standard bred," they dont care about preservation of the breed, and they certainly dont care about quality. All they care about is $$$ and ignorant buyers who haven't properly researched the breed....

Thanks!

It depends on the quality. I haven't decided which one's I'll be selling yet, but I don't think I'll be asking more than $40.

Also, I know for a fact that there are some people who have been selling birds and they have other breeders run up the auctions so they get high prices for those birds. I am not saying who, but I have seen it. Freakin dishonest it is. I couldn't comprehend doing that to someone intentionally. I always start my auctions at the minimum I want for the bird, I never give even a reserve on them.
