BYC Café

Like to watch them from a distance. But, I recall finding a beheaded cardinal on the ground with a bunch of red feathers. Dirty trick, the hawk was sitting on a telephone pole waiting for birds coming to the feeder. I took the feeder down, no more lazy raptor meals on my watch.

It's a bird feeder; just a different kind of bird being fed.

But yeah, I agree - the pleasure you get from watching birds at the feeder sours when you see them getting eaten. It feels like treachery, or something . . . kinda like when the cat you applaud for catching rats catches a bird right in front of you.

Thanks for the coffee, Sour!:caf

It's a 'bird feeder' indeed. If there is a food source, predators will come. I have 3 feeders in use now, and will soon add a fourth. All are located within easy access to shrubbery/cover. Occasionally a bird will get taken by a hawk, but they are programmed for survival. I must admit that it does aggravate me when a Cardinal gets eaten.

I've found someone who is better suited to care for my leghorns. They're already getting horrible frostbite. I never did win the ventilation argument. Although I'll miss the eggs I won't be too sorry to see them go. This guy has lots of breeds so I may do a trade for hens better suited to this climate.
