BYC Café

He is probably asleep i am guessing. I need to hit the sack too. Have a great night, dear.

Yah Sour would be in bed - he gets up early

That's okay, I figured he'djust reply in the morning :)

But I happened to be looking at breeders and thought to ask right then hah

Good morning, time for that 1st cup of coffee or tea! :caf

Can I have some honey or some sort of cold remedy in mine?

Goldenways golden retrievers in Colts Neck, Nj.

That's where I was.

Good morning, Café.

Thanks! I've been looking up breeders and there are surprisingly A LOT in New England, and even more surprising, a lot of good/reputable ones, not just like one then a bunch of bad ones, so it's made it hard to decide. But anyway, even though there's so many here, I figured I'd expand the search a bit too. And since I know you like yours so much (or I think you do?), I figured I would ask.

So I'm assuming you like the breeder too since you recommended/named them? Have you gotten the other ones there too or? And what's your Golden like? In terms of temperament, intelligence (and trainability), energy, etc.?

Sorry if this is too many questions.

I probably won't be able to get a dog for a while but I like looking.

I have a lot of breeds I want to try (Aussie, GSD, English Shepherd, Husky both Alaskan and Siberian, Chinook, Leonberger, Boston Terrier, some other terriers, etc. etc.) And I still do want to try all of those but the more I've been thinking about it.... the more I think I should just go with a popular breed. I mean, they are popular for a reason. Plus, some of the rarer breeds like Chinook I think are a little too concerned or involved. I mean, I 100% get the concern, because they are SO rare, but I don't really want to deal with it. Or like for example, they are so rare they want a lot of health tests to see how the stock is doing or for you to consider keeping the dog intact to help further the breed, all of which is completely understandable, but not something I want to do right now. And Leonbergers are WAY too big. And some like huskies and aussies are just way too energetic for me atm.

We have always had and loved Labs so I am also considering those (there's a ton of breeders of those here too) but both my parents seem to think we should get a Golden instead. Idk why. Are they calmer? My dad, as I think you know, is extremely concerned about the ears. My mom thinks I should get a smaller dog. But I like Goldens and they're small compared to Gator.

Anyway, I don't have much experience with the Golden as I was pretty young when we had ours but I have always found the Labs and I'm sure retrievers in general to just be fun loving, goofy, dogs as well as smart and sweet as can be.

I'm kind of torn between which one I want though. Golden do seem calmer but my main concern right now with them, which never really occurred to me before, is the grooming. It seems like it would be a lot of work with all that fur? Seems like it would be more brushing than a Lab? Or am I wrong and it's not as hard as I think to keep them mat free?

I rode a bull once. Stayed on him for about 10 minutes

WOW! Most of the bulls now barely let people stay on 8 seconds. Some barely even 4. I feel like theyve bred bulls crazier and crazier lol

Morning! Gonna get cold here as well. DS$ got second! He was psyched to finally place in the top three of a national tournament. I am incredibly happy for him as he has been working so hard.

That's awesome! Congrats!

Mornin', y'all!:frow

NFC, I am so glad you put a pot on for tea, too. Still not able to face coffee, for some reason, but tea is nice to cozy up to.

They have a mechanical bull every year at the fair. This year, BB2K decided to check it out (I wasn't there, she was with some friends). She told me she got "thrown" a few times, but her experience riding horses helped a great deal - when she felt herself getting off-balance, she did an emergency dismount (that's a tongue-in-cheek reference to one of Rick Gore's pet peeves) and landed on her feet every time.

Sounds fun! Maybe I'll try it next fair. I think we did have one.

Wow you are a champ! Most folks count seconds!

Most barely stay on these days!

Was it one of these?

@Mtn Margie - Impressive! Congrats to your boy!:clap

He was a very tame Texas longhorn. Rode around a field at a nice leisurely pace. I have a pic somewhere...

Yup it was :)

Morning folks first cup here but had a 4-h bull as a kid tame as a kitten rode him into the trailer or around whatever

Nice!

Never rode a bull, but been known to speak a bit.

Lol

KD, Golden Retrievers are very active dogs and love to run and play fetch. I have a friend who had two and they are always wanting to go out and play. Most Goldens i have seen do not have coats that need constant grooming. Unless out in the woods where they might pick up burrs. They are quite smart and do well in obedience training. They want a lot of attention. If no one in the family spends a lot of time outside you might consider a smaller breed.
We considered getting goldens but between hip and skin problems we passed. Any dog with drop ears can have ear infection issues as well.

Raised and showed Cocker spaniels for years. Never had bad ear problems with them. But then I would check my dogs out once a week or more often if concerned. Believe me Cockers probably have longest ear leathers of any breed - and drop ears don't get air like prick ears do. I would always trim hair on the inside of the ear flap , and use a hair puller (hemostat) to pull actual hair growing in the top most area of the ear canal.

If you stick to a routine, you will find it gets easier and quicker to do. Much better than waiting for hideous ear infections, stench and all the goop dripping out :sick. Easier to prevent problems than treat them.
