You guys are not going to believe this. I have been up since 1 AM guarding my chickens. Bear attack, came in through the backside, took out some meaties and one hen. The rest? Guess we will see who shows up. The babies are okay. Not really scared of the firecrackers either. I would assume that it will be back tonight and, "Challenge accepted!"
I have more chicks coming in today,

(how is this even possible?) , so I guess I will get them comfy and head off to get a kick A electric fence charger - 1 Joule as opposed to the horse one that we have- wimpy. I am tired and I am cold, standing outside with trips in the house to warm up. Hot Tea is my best friend.
Stupid bear! Don't even know if it is the same one, seemed smaller. Stupid Bear!

Try a 5 joule, they do kick *** and knock down horses and people at least one time. don't know if the horse was surprised and fell/tripped over it's own feet or was knocked down.
Good luck with our bear.

How maddening (and scary) that must have been! Are you allowed to shoot them? I'm thinking a nice fur coat would keep you warm Margie!
he he - Poor Mtn Margie that sounds awful you will have to get an electric fence - mine pushes out more than Im allowed lol and gives a really nasty shot - I believe if your going to do something do it well - fry that bear -BTW can you eat bear? wuld probably last the whole winter if you get snowed in...

The chicks are all looking good... 5 Buff Wyandotte, 4 Icelandic, 1 Basque, 10 Blue Cochin, 13 Rose Comb RIR = 33 total so I am ahead for the day.
9 Meaties and 1 hen lost. 1 Meatie injured but still kinda mobile. I will give her extra care tonight, but for today I am letting them be. They are freaked out! My main crew is calming down and laying eggs. They were not really messed with too much.
Well, I am getting on the fencing project for the day. Stupid bear.... my mantra...

Margie, those girls of yours are some kind of troopers! I figured they would be off laying for a couple days after a scare like that. Good girls.

It's all in what the hens are used to. My girls looked like ping-pong balls at the gold metal match the 1st time I drove my tractor right next to their run, now all they do is watch for dirt & such falling of off the tires.
Good luck Margie!!

All quiet.... either he snuck in and got zapped or he is somewhere else. DOW said they were having major bear issues all across the Front Range.

New manta...., Stupid Rodents and Bears.
