Howdy WVduckckick! Plenty of room over here, especially if we keep our elbows off the table....
I don't think shaking hands with someone is formal, I think it is just good manners whether your "country", "business" or "whatever."
My sons were taught to hold the door open for those following but I do know from peoples' comments when we are out, that good manners are fading into the background for the general mainstream public scene- teen / young adult. But it is not just good manners fading, it is a whole set of values and connection with the community and the people that surround them that are taking a hit. A lot of these - say under 30s? maybe, are so disconnected with the whole process of basic living and dying and where things come from. How does one function without TV, phone, keeping up with the Joneses? How could a person possibly exist and try to keep sane with all of the stuff that one is supposed to do and have and not gray, wrinkle or age in any way and somehow, still have time to really connect with and raise a successful well-adjusted kid.
Impossible! So there is my 2 cents, sorry I went off a bit.

Welcome, WVduckchick. Why is my foot all coffee stained and burning?

We can be a bit outspoken, but we are sincere.

Wow, thanks for the welcome. I can be a bit outspoken myself sometimes, but you all seem like fine people with ideals like mine. So I think I'll sit a spell!

But y'all can have all the coffee. I'll be 50 this summer and somehow never acquired a taste for it. I am an admitted diet-coke-aholic. I know its not good for me, but its one of those things.

So I guess I will explain a little of how I got here to begin with. My sister in law decided she had too many roos, so I offered to take a few in for her. A few months ago, she brought me 5 beautiful roosters and 3 drakes. My husband (of almost 11 years!) and I have a "camp" about 45 minutes from our home, around 75 acres. We spend weekends there, hunt deer in the winter, plant a few veggies in the summer... just a get away place that we enjoy. So we took the roos and ducks there. The ducks absolutely loved our pond. We weren't sure about predators, and we ended up losing 3 roos before we got the coop and run finished. But the final two are wonderful now. Being away from our home, and the fact that we had horrible weather for a couple months, the pond froze and we couldn't keep it open for the ducks and they disappeared. I still hope they went somewhere on their own, and that predators didn't get them, but I have no idea yet. We just weren't ready for it all! But the good news is, I have ducks in my incubator now, due to lockdown tomorrow, should hatch Thursday or Friday. So we'll see how that goes.

Anyway, I found this place while researching incubating, but its also nice to have a place to hang out and just shoot the breeze. I do normally work throughout the week, (I'm in accounting) but our company is not having a great time right now, so when workers have been laid off, I have voluntarily taken layoff. Gives me some time at home, and this week is going to be tough, with my ducklings due! So I am happy to have this week off. So I look forward to getting to know you all~

Hello and welcome! I'm in Minnesota. :). We are first time chicken owners waiting on chicks in May. In the meantime I'm a sponge soaking up the good info from the nice folks here. :)

We have a bit in common, WV. I am a diet-coke addicted accountant also! It must be the job
