I've taken a chance with Fudge and she's gone off with her tribe. I've never met a chicken that liked being separated from their tribe. The only time they stay in the house voluntarily is when they are just too sick or too sore to cope with the possibility of a rooster mating them. Fudge has done it twice in the past half hour. While resting she got right into the middle of the tribe under the bush and just kept her head down. Fat Bird gave her a few pecks, as did Ruffles which is par for the course when a junior hen has been away from the tribe overnight. Once that bit is over it seems they're accepted as if nothing has happened. Fudge is in the tribe coop laying an egg as I type this.
Confining her to the house just causes her stress. Yesterday she stayed of her own accord; this morning after a while she wanted out. As mentioned above it didn't go well and she came back to the house with a bit of herding. Being in and with a tribe seems to be the most important thing for a chicken.
I'll pick her up later and give her another clean and some eye drops and worry.

AT 12:27 AM Goldenways Dances With the Stars aka Dani died. :hit Much tears here. The Princess is devastated, and all I can do is :hugs. This was 'her' dog.

Vet called at 10 to warn me that things had taken a turn for the worse. Heart rate and BP were good, hematocrit was good, but she was fading. She died on a blanket beside him - not in a cage. He spent the night with her so she was not alone. To quote the Princess, "He's just a good man."

Why did she die ? He is baffled. About 3 weeks ago we thought that she was going to die one night - lethargic, no appetite, shallow breathing - that all caused the visit to the vet where the tumor was discovered. In 24 hours she appeared normal. :idunno Perhaps she was having mini strokes and then just had a major embolism. Whatever for the first time in nearly 55 years we no longer have a dog in the house.
:hugs I am very sorry to hear this!

You do have a great vet for Him to stick with her

Awe Sour, I'm so sorry for your loss. My heart aches for you guys. Losing a beloved animal is an awful pain. Take care :hugs

Fudge spent the day out with her tribe. When I went to give them supper she was having some problems with her half sister Mel. They have never got on particularly well. Mel has just got something against Fudge. I saw Mel launch a full out attempt at flogging Fudge while her back was turned. Much to my surprise Fudge turned to fight and made a leap at Mel but Mel had already backed away.
I collected Mel and brought her to the house. Roost time can be a bit of a scrap some days. There is some blood seeping around the edges of Fudges eyes which is concerning, but she has the eye open a lot more.
She eat lots, including some fish with her usual food. She's drinking; I added a bit of multi vitamin, and she's alert.
She's cleaned up, Metcamed, eye washed and dropped, Betadined above the ear and is now sitting in the nest box. I'm going to leave her there for the night.:love

Thanks, friends. Just to get out of the house we went for breakfast. Surprisingly we became hungry. Food makes things better.

When Livvie died we said, "No more dogs!" Within 6 months we had Dani. Livvie was a pushover which made her a bit soft for obedience competition. We told the breeder that we wanted a pup with a strong personality when we went for Dani. She picked the pup for us. As a puppy if you tried to reprimand her she would sit there and pop her jaws at you. She didn't respond well to discipline. We used the crate in a fashion that is generally not productive - when she misbehaved she got 'time out'. Turns out her mother had the same personality. She learned obedience quickly but did things when SHE wanted to - so much for competition. :hmm She ran away three times. Once before we installed invisible fence and twice after. All three times she came home around two in the morning. Life with her was a lot like living with a teen aged daughter. She always pushed the rules and limits. She and the Princess never quite resolved who was dominant. She begrudgingly accepted the fact that I might be boss. She was both a trial and a joy. She had a good life here and will be missed by all who knew her.

Thanks again for your sympathies. You all are very special

I'm still reeling from the shock & sadness after reading this on another thread. Your vet really is a good man & I bet he's devastated too. :(

I know you'd said you never get another dog after this for fear that you'd out live it. Sometimes the best medicine for loss is new love. Never to replace, but to ease the pain a little. If you & Princess eventually decide to go down this road again & you're worried about the dogs future, know that Doug & I would drive out to Jersey at the drop of a hat & bring her home. Too early to think about this now, but the offer will always stand.

Many hugs!:hugs:hugs:hugs:hugs:hugs:hugs:hugs:hugs:hugs:hugs:hugs:hugs:hugs:hugs

Just made buffalo burgers, sweet potato, and sautéed spinach for lunch if anybody’s hungry. Also have regular beef left still and plenty of eggs if anyone would rather breakfast for lunch or an egg on top of the burger, which I almost did but decided against. Tried to be healthy and not use a bun of dairy or anything and put olive oil on the sweet potato instead of butter but we do have some cheese and buns and of course butter, ghee, sour cream, etc. if you want that and despite being mostly healthy, I am still a sucker for ketchup and mayonnaise with my burgers. cutting those is next lol we also have barbecue sauce and mustards and honey mustard and stuff and plenty of salad dressings. And relish and onions.
