Dh and I went to eat late yesterday afternoon (Cracker Barrel), and on the way back I noticed a sign that said German Shepherd puppies for sale. On a whim, we stopped in. We talked with the owner for quite some time. First off, the pups are at least 5 months old, and on the skinny side, with dull coats. One of the females, she's not selling. I asked why she waited so long to start selling them. According to her, she didn't wait, but she doesn't advertise, or list them, she only puts the signs out by the road, and these are what she has left. I suspect they had parvo, and they're just getting into decent enough condition to attempt selling.
Secondly I asked about how they got along with other animals. Well, she had a cat, but the parents killed it. They've also killed other cats that have wandered on to the property, and have taught the pups this behavior. I mentioned we have 2 cats. Then she added "they're German Shepherds, so you know how that goes". I listened, without commenting, but no, I don't know how that goes. Growing up, we owned a couple good German Shepherds. They got along fine with my poodle, cats, and cockatiel. I've heard, and seen a lot of ads complaining about this breed not getting along with other animals. Maybe it has to do with us raising ours with other animals, or they were of a better temperament, and disposition, but neither of my German Shepherds had problems with other animals. In fact, they were a herding dog, so all of this high level "other animal" aggression is somewhat contrary to what their true nature should be.
Thirdly, they are not AKC registered, but NKC registered. NKC registration can be very iffy. The dad looked good, but they would not let us see the female. Too aggressive for them to control. Not exactly the temperament I'm looking for.
She was only asking $1,000.00 per pup. I'll pass.
