BYC Café

Dh and I went to eat late yesterday afternoon (Cracker Barrel), and on the way back I noticed a sign that said German Shepherd puppies for sale. On a whim, we stopped in. We talked with the owner for quite some time. First off, the pups are at least 5 months old, and on the skinny side, with dull coats. One of the females, she's not selling. I asked why she waited so long to start selling them. According to her, she didn't wait, but she doesn't advertise, or list them, she only puts the signs out by the road, and these are what she has left. I suspect they had parvo, and they're just getting into decent enough condition to attempt selling.

Secondly I asked about how they got along with other animals. Well, she had a cat, but the parents killed it. They've also killed other cats that have wandered on to the property, and have taught the pups this behavior. I mentioned we have 2 cats. Then she added "they're German Shepherds, so you know how that goes". I listened, without commenting, but no, I don't know how that goes. Growing up, we owned a couple good German Shepherds. They got along fine with my poodle, cats, and cockatiel. I've heard, and seen a lot of ads complaining about this breed not getting along with other animals. Maybe it has to do with us raising ours with other animals, or they were of a better temperament, and disposition, but neither of my German Shepherds had problems with other animals. In fact, they were a herding dog, so all of this high level "other animal" aggression is somewhat contrary to what their true nature should be.

Thirdly, they are not AKC registered, but NKC registered. NKC registration can be very iffy. The dad looked good, but they would not let us see the female. Too aggressive for them to control. Not exactly the temperament I'm looking for.

She was only asking $1,000.00 per pup. I'll pass.

Wow that lady sounds extremely irresponsible and frankly stupid/ignorant. She shouldn’t even own dogs if she can’t control or train them let alone be breeding them!!! Especially such horrible specimens and poor representations of the breeds. Sounds like she’s just greedy and selfish and trying to make money off her animals. Poor dogs. :(

Unbelievable. Backyard breeder at it's finest.

Holy moly  Exactly the kind of things that gives certain breeds bad names.

That is very true!!! People will think all GSDs are aggressive and mean and nasty from these pups and their parents :( people don’t care if the dog is a bad example of the breed, they just know it is that breed.

I admit to having a prejudice against GSDs.
After the neighbors pair attacked the other neighbors cat, growled at my 80 year old father on my property, charged my DH, killed one of my chickens and did this to Ben, I just don't like the breed.

Oh wow that is terrible!!! I would hate those dogs too!! Ha I still don’t think it is the breed or even the dogs fault though, the owner sounds like a freaking idiot for allowing that to happen and allowing them to run free. Good GSDs are amazing dogs. But I completely understand the prejudice. I think those dogs would make me hate or be scared of the breed too. And I’m sure you understand breed prejudice with having a Doberman. My mother hates them and Rotts and Pits and shepherds and those type of dogs. :(

They actually don't let them run free. They just keep taking too many chances by opening the gate to let them get in the truck and the dogs take off at the first distraction.
After they killed my chicken, we haven't had any more issues. I swear I could beat them to death with a shovel if they ever came back on my property to attack one of my animals.
