We usually get a solid 6 months, easy. It changes every year, though. Our first snow storm came at the end of September and set records. It's been nice here compared to a lot of places, like Wyoming(DebbyWe get fleas here. Nothing drastic and they stay with the dogs by and large. A few hard freezes are great for killing off the mosquitoes and slowing down the flies and wasps.
Normally we get a winter that lasts a couple of months. Even in the winter we get lots of daytime sunshine. It seems from reading some of the posts on BYC that some people get 8 months of winter with a bit of sunshine squeezed in the other 4 months.
I just couldn't cope with that. The weather effects the brain and here lots of people smile, don't take it all too seriously and mix with everyone else. I like that. When I've been in Northern Germany for example the people are much more closed in and, well, cold, despite all the outward friendliness. I don't like that either.
Oh, that's interesting. I suppose that's why I've never heard of it. I will have to look it up!Meg no it is Salmon poisoning limited to here Oregon and small part of California northern coast there was a old veterinary here that actually developed a vaccine for it no one would take it on the disease is so limited in area
It doesn't have to freeze to kill off the bugs ~ not here anyways. It just has to be colder than summer.Funny, I've had that same thought! The good thing about the cold (maybe the only good thing) is that it kills the bugs. I didn't realize until a couple years ago that places that don't freeze hard have to deal with perpetual fleas. I'm sure there are others, too, I just never thought about it! My dogs have never had them.

I was talking with my eldest a while ago trying to explain why I did some of the things I've done in my life. My daughter is thinking of moving to Poland. Her husband is Polish. We usually get a solid 6 months, easy. It changes every year, though. Our first snow storm came at the end of September and set records. It's been nice here compared to a lot of places, like Wyoming(Debby)! Which generally is a bad sign. When it hits it'll hit with a vengeance. Like last year. And we never did get much of a spring/summer/fall out of it.
I bet you're right about the attitudes between people who live in different climates. Winter, whether you like the season or not, really starts to wear on a person. Not to mention people in the northern climates don't get the vitamin D that they should. That's why they recommend supplements.
ETA: For clarity.
Unfortunately.Ribh, are you guys still fighting the fires down there?
Unfortunately.State of emergency declared in 2 states for this weekend. Forced evacuations as townships undefendable. Highways clogged & people sleeping on the side of the road as they try to get out. One township is camped on the beach & the navy is starting evacuations from there this morning. It's so bad we may lose some fragile & endangered species. The bristle bird is one. There are only 3 known colonies & 2 are under threat of fire. It is going to take years to recover & some places never may. One township got completely wiped off the map. Nothing left standing. Where I am is in a safe zone. we've had some smoke haze but nothing too bad.
