I guess that is why the minnows and bluegill managed to stay alive every winter even though the pond behind the barn was shallow (unknown depth but surely not close to frost depth). There is no aerator and the pond has no water source other than rain and melting snow. They succumbed when the pond went dry some years ago. Decreasing water and an opportunistic Great Blue Heron did them in before it finally went dry. I dug it out (after buying a tractor with a backhoe) so it is likely about 5'+ deep at the deepest part when full.I kept fish in the other pond without issue. The water doesn't freeze that low. And an aerator run during winter will keep a hole in the ice for gas exchange.
