I think the younger generation is more disillusioned and maybe more realistic about their employment.
A lot of work is now part-time, contract, or otherwise non-permanent. Things like pensions are non-existent, and even if you have one there's no guarantee that you'll still have it if something happens to the company down the road.
There's also a sense that you don't owe your employer more then the work you provide - which is true. It's important to take care of yourself and family. One of the number one things that people who are dying have said they regret is working too much. I think the younger generation is hearing that and trying to learn from it.

(Of course these are generalizations! and are very regional and culturally dependent, and most definitely do not hold true to any one whole group, and won't apply to lots and lots of people, and there are a million other factors that go into why we do what we do...etc etc etc:))
You are very very right.
Sadly the corporate world is only in it to make money for themselves. It's not worth extra effort on the workers' part anymore.

Oh and hi cafe :frow

I guess I have a different take on this subject based on the millennials I've worked with the past couple of years.

Whether the job is part-time, seasonal, whatever...when someone takes the time to hire you, train you and gives you the opportunity to earn a pay check, there is an obligation on the employees part to 1) show up on time when you're scheduled and 2) to actually work when you are at work (put the cell phones down!). This is not the employee doing the employer a favor...it's the employee living up to their part of the bargain (a pay check in exchange for work).

Maybe my experiences haven't been the norm, but from what I've seen living in both FL and WY the past few years, it's hard to find someone under the age of 30+ that takes pride in their efforts to do a decent job.

I disagree with this younger generation feeling they have to play while they can because they don't want to regret missing out on fun when they're on their deathbed...most of the ones I know think they'll live forever and there are no repercussions for their behavior. I think it's because they've been pampered, have no sense of responsibility and have been taught someone will give them whatever they want without any more effort on the kid's part than whining. That's my generalization.

Sorry, I'll get off my soap box now. Just my 2 cents.
(Don't mind me...after the past couple of summers, I've just had it up to here with trying to help younger people out by hiring them for a seasonal job.)

I agree with you NFC. I blame my generation for a large part of it.

Nothing worse than having a total slacker. When you attempt to discipline they go running to mommy and daddy. Then you have to deal with them.

When I was at Starbucks we had a communication binder. The only way we could get anyone to read it was to schedule time. I had this one girl who clocked in, said she had read everything already, so went to Taco Bell while still clocked in. She couldn't understand why she was in trouble. Even her mother, who came in to bitch to us, couldn't understand what the problem was.

Yup. Just have to pay a mortgage on a house we're not even living in. :p
That is so not good. It was really a pain for us to have 2 houses, and Mom's house and my Aunt's house all to take care of! Glad all that mess is gone.

Morning, afternoon and evening! It is snowing here now, but this AM, when I went down to check out some hay and get some chores done, it was nice. Good thing, cause when I checked on the sheep hay, there was some other hay and the dude said $4 and I just happened to have $200 on me, so I spent the morning loading and racing the storm back up the hill to unload into the horse barn. No other chores were accomplished but, SCORE! I am heading down on Sat to get the sheep hay.

I have lamb riblets cooking for dinner and a fire going in the wood stove.
Have a great night you all!

Yeah. Right now we just use it to keep our stuff, get drinking water, do laundry and take a real bath or shower (as opposed to the sponge baths we take here).
