That is awful.

I have never understood why people get a dog, any dog, and never pay attention to it or exercise it or anything but especially the working and sporting breeds!! Those breeds need so much exercise and training and people just get them and stick them in a yard. And then half the time, they wonder why the dog is crazy, unruly, a terror, whatever, and rehome it. Usually right in the teenage phase, 6 months, 1 year, 18 months, or sometimes slightly older, like 2 or 3, I think I read somewhere most of the dogs in shelters are under 3. Sad. People don’t realize they grow out of that teenage phase eventually but also that in order to grow out of it, they need exercise and training. Stuck in a crate or the backyard all day, of course they’re gonna be crazy. But people don’t want to put in the work to have a trained, happy dog and/or they just plain don’t want it anymore when it gets too big and no longer “cute” anymore and just give up on it. Not that these people have, at least they still have them, and at least the dogs have each other to play with so they’re not totally unexercised but still. They want so much more. I see so many people never taking their dogs for walks or never letting them run around or whatever. And I can see if you are really busy or maybe can’t walk due to a disability or age or something, but there’s plenty of people who can and just don’t, and there are also plenty of other ways to exercise and/or tire a dog out. I knew someone with a Border Collie once that they said was a great dog but she was always crazy when they got home. Yeah... cause you kept her locked in a crate all day while you and the kids were at work or school. Of course she was crazy once released. But at least they kept her. Knew someone else with a Border Collie who would just let it out into the fenced pool area and let it run laps around the pool by itself for hours. At least the dog was being exercised so that’s not quite as bad but still. Huskies too. Seen sooo many people get working dogs then be surprised when the dog isn’t just magically well behaved and actually needs quite a lot of exercise and training. I feel like this is especially true lately because people just get the really popular breeds, like Border Collies and Huskies, the ones they see all over Instagram and YouTube and on TV, because they are super smart or they are gorgeous and fluffy, and they want a dog just like that, not realizing the dogs aren’t born perfect. Corgis and Shiba Indus are another extremely popular one recently due to all the memes and stuff. Corgis are great dogs but I don’t think people realize they are actually herding breeds that need exercise and not just cute, fat, fluff balls (and they’re not even supposed to be as fat as most I see). And Shibas are definitely not for everybody, actually can be quite standoffish and hard to train and stubborn and not the cute, super cuddly, fluffy things people think they will be when they see a picture or meme of one. So many nice breeds end up in the wrong hands or ruined because of their popularity and it is really sad. Much like Dalmatians with 101 Dalmatians except now it is way easier for breeds to become popular instantaneously with social media, which is unfortunate for many breeds. I just hope the Belgian Malinois is not next because they are truly a beautiful, extremely intelligent breed. So far they seem to not be too affected though and I have not seen too many in need of new homes. I was worried when that movie Max came out and then the subsequent sequel. There are also a couple extremely popular/famous Malinois on YouTube that are awesome, extremely well trained, can do all sorts of amazing tricks, etc. and I have seen some people in the comments be like I am getting a Malinois because of (dogs name) or I really want a Malinois because of you and I always cringe a little bit when I read those because I don’t think people really know what they are getting themselves into. Same thing on Husky YouTubers and most other breeds. But so far the Malinois seems to have not been too affected yet. Perhaps because they are harder to come by and a lot of the reputable breeders won’t just give them out, unlike Huskies or whatever which you can buy at just about any pet store. But I do always worry about them and other breeds especially because there are a lot of awesome clips of the military dogs too. But they do not get like that overnight and are a very challenging breed. But anyway, sorry for the novel and the fact that this kind of turned into a bit of a rant, whoops

sorry
