Well, sometimes decisions are made for you.
I saved her the indignity of being turned over to photograph.
Three broken eggs. Her under side already had two firmly stuck. There is no way she can turn or position the eggs when she is such a sticky mess. I would have to check her every hour and turn the eggs myself at this rate. She gets distressed when the eggs break and this makes her fidget even more and this in turn breaks more eggs.
At the current rate it would all be over in a few days.
I've unstuck the two eggs, one has a crack in it. Cleaned off the straw stuck to her belly and bum. Got the worst of the egg off her wings and she is now outside having a dust bath.
Sad thought it is, Fat Bird is just not meant to be a mum.

Poor Fat Bird! She's 9 years old though, so it's not like she has had a great life.
At least you're able to break a broody in the house with you for company. I loath putting my girls in the crate. At least I make a concerted effort to remove them twice daily and only put them back when I see them head for the nest box again.

Good morning Cafe. Thanks for the fresh pot, Shad.
Barb never took the chicks out of the brooder yesterday although she could have. The day prior, she had them out for several hours.
Any hen as well as Fabio is allowed to approach and touch/peck the chicks. If any pullet comes within 8 feet of them, Barb launches an attack and they run shrieking for the chicken bush.
Barb refuses to feed the chicks from the dish of medicated chick mash I left for them and the chicks won't eat it unless mom says so. Just like you told me she'd do, Shad.
So I've resorted to dumping clumps of mash in the pine shavings inside the brooder and in the wood chips in the brooder run for her to "find" when she is scratching and she calls the chicks over to eat.

Good morning, Café. It's NJ hot and humid once again. We were going to a county fair, but will wait until the temperature moderates and go later in the week.

Morning Mr. Sour, county fairs are always great entertainment. Only thing though was I was showing my cattle and was too busy getting them ready for the show ring to fully enjoy the goings on.

Sadly over the years this fair has become less 'farmer's' and more 'fair', but there is a grange food stand that makes the BEST pies. I'm already salivating over their peach/wineberry pie.
